Oil Pan: Service and Repair


To remove (in car)





1. Remove the dipstick and put a cloth in the pipe. Suspend the engine from the lifting beam, part no. 83 94 850. Disconnect the oxygen sensor cable. Remove the heat shield (turbo).
2. Raise the car, drain the engine oil and position the lifting trolley under the engine.





3. Remove the front wheels and the air shields. Undo the joint between the front exhaust pipe and the intermediate pipe.
4. Unscrew the front exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold or, alternatively, from the turbocharger. Detach the three way catalytic converter from its mounting and remove the exhaust pipe.





5. Unscrew the nuts on both sides of the end piece and the rear engine mounting. Raise the lifting trolley, undo the remaining bolts and remove the subframe.





6. Remove the protective plate and oil sump. Leave the guide sleeve in the cylinder block. Wipe up any oil that has dripped out.


To fit (in car)
1. Check that there are no impurities or other foreign matter in the sump and clean the sealing surfaces with benzine.





2. Apply an even bead of flange sealant, part no. 93 21 795, to the sealing surface of the oil sump and fit the oil sump.
Tightening torque: 22 Nm (16.2 ft. lbs.)
3. Fit the protective plate.
4. Lift up the subframe and bolt it in place.
Tightening torques:
Front: 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.)
Center: 190 Nm (140.6 ft. lbs.)
Rear: 110 Nm + 75° (81.4 ft. lbs. + 75°)





5. Fit and tighten the nuts on the end piece.
Tightening torque: 75 Nm (55.5 ft. lbs.)
6. Clean the area for the joint in the exhaust pipe.





7. Fit the front exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold or, alternatively, to the turbocharger. Lubricate the studs on the turbocharger with Molycote 1000 before fitting.
8. Suspend the three way catalytic converter and screw together the joint between the front exhaust pipe and the intermediate pipe.
9. Fit the air shields and wheels.
Tightening torques: Wheels: 110 Nm (81 ft. lbs.)





10. Make sure the oil plug is tight. Lower the car and fill with engine oil. Put back the dipstick and connect the oxygen sensor cable. Fit the heat shield (turbo).
11. Remove the lifting beam, warm up the engine and check for leaks from the sealing surfaces.
