Check Safety-Related Components When Repairing Cars Damaged In A Collision
Check Safety-related Components When Repairing Cars Damaged In A Collision
Cars with triggered seat-belt tensioner and or side airbag
The following components must be replaced when repairing a car in which the seat-belt tensioners and/or the side airbags have been triggered.
The control module can be used a maximum of three times for activating the side airbags. See Technical description SRS control module.
Check and if necessary repair or replace the wiring harness for the side impact sensor, side airbag and seat-belt tensioner.
Cars with a triggered seat-belt tensioner
When repairing a car with a triggered seat-belt tensioner, the following components must always be changed:
- All seat belts and belt tensioners in the front seats (1). See Front seat belts with belt tensioners triggered, 5D or Front seat belts with belt tensioners triggered, 3D.
- All seat belts in the rear seat that were used during the collision (2).
Cars with a triggered side airbag
When repairing a car with a triggered side airbag, the following components must always be changed:
- Side impact sensor, side airbag and backrest upholstery (3).
WARNING: The backrest upholstery cover must always be replaced after a side airbag has been triggered. A damaged or repaired cover is liable to affect the performance of the side airbag.
Cars with a triggered airbag
When repairing a car with a triggered airbag, the following components must always be changed:
- Steering wheel, airbag, and steering column assembly (1).
- Contact roller (2).
- Control module (3).
- All seat belts and belt tensioners in the front seats (4). See Front seat belts with belt tensioners triggered, 5D or Front seat belts with belt tensioners triggered, 3D.
- All seat belts in the rear seat that were used during the collision (5).
- Passenger airbag (where applicable) and dashboard (6).
- Side airbags, with respective sensor and backrest upholstery, that were detonated during the collision (7).
The following components must be inspected for burn damage and deformation:
- Knee shield
- SRS wiring harness
- Windscreen
Change damaged components. See Knee shield, driver, Knee shield, passenger, and Windscreen.
WARNING: Change all the seat belts if it cannot be determined with certainty which belts were in use when the collision occurred. The seat belt on the passenger side must always be changed, even if it has not been used. This is because the seat-belt tensioner has been triggered.
