Liftgate Window Glass: Service and Repair

Rear Window

To remove

Open the door windows to prevent them from breaking due to the pressure that builds up in the cabin if any of the doors closes rapidly.

1. Remove the parcel shelf.
2. Remove the cover above the rear window inside the tailgate.







3. Remove the covers on the sides of the rear window inside the tailgate.
4. Remove the tailgate trim.
5. Cars with spoiler and rear wiper unit on tailgate:
5.a. Remove the rear wiper arm.
5.b. Remove the wiper motor.
5.c. Remove nuts and washer on the spoiler. Lift off the spoiler.







6. Remove nuts and studs holding the top of the window.







7. Remove nuts and studs holding the bottom of the window.
8. Unplug the electric connections for rear window heating and turn up the contact plates against the window.
9. When changing glued windows, use 82 93 714 Window removal tool kit. If the window is so damaged that the suction cups will not fasten, use 30 14 099 Cutting wire handles to cut out the window with the help of an assistant.

WARNING: Use the protective equipment that is supplied with the windscreen removal and adhesive kit, such as the goggles and protective gloves.

10. Measure up 6.5 m cutting wire.
11. Insert the screwdriver through the adhesive from inside. There are marks on the outside moulding to show where it is best to insert the screwdriver (a small notch in the moulding). Take care not to damage the rubber moulding if the window is to be refitted.







12. Hook the ends of the wire onto the eye of the screwdriver and bend over the ends so they will not slide off.
13. Pull the screwdriver back through the adhesive into the cabin. Pull in the wires about 0.7 m.
14. Unhook the cutting wire from the screwdriver. Straighten the ends of the wire to an oblique angle. Remove the screwdriver from the car.
15. Place the wire under the moulding. Poke it in using the plastic tool that came with the kit. Make sure the cutting wire is around all the corners. Pull in the wires and check their position.







16. Fit the reels on the corners inside the window.







17. Fasten the ends of the wire in the reel spools. Make sure the wires do not get crossed. Use the groove in the reel suction cup as a pulley to obtain a good angle.







18. Wind with a ratchet handle so that the wire cuts through the adhesive. If necessary, use the protective tool with suction cup between the cutting wire and the metal so that the wire does not cut into the metal. Gradually move the reel to obtain a good angle. An acute angle will cut better. If necessary, use the second reel for support. If you think the wire might break, cease cutting for about 10-15 seconds to allow the wire to work into the adhesive.







19. Stop cutting when the wires reach the window guide pin (top centre of widow). Lift off the window with the help of an assistant.

To fit

IMPORTANT: Betaseal X 2500 cures in 1 hour at 23 degrees C and 50% relative humidity. To avoid the glass from coming loose or its position changing during the curing time, the car must not be subjected to jolts or blows. The doors, tailgate and bonnet must not be shut. The car must not be rocked or rolled. Neither must the glass be pressed in while the adhesive is curing.

Use 30 05 600 Adhesive kit when gluing window panes. To avoid confusion when cleaning and priming, the tube caps are different colours.







The car must be standing on all four wheels on a level surface when fitting the window. In order to obtain as good a result as possible, it is essential that all cleaned and primed surfaces are kept free from dirt while work is in progress. The same applies to the adhesive when being applied. Consequently, work must progress without interruption until the window has been fitted and the adhesive hardened. The adhesive will start to harden as soon as the contents of both tubes has been mixed together. The window must then be in place within 5 minutes from when the adhesive was first applied. Note that points 6-10 must be carried out in exactly the given order so that a satisfactory result is obtained with maximum adhesion.

1. Cut down the adhesive on the tailgate to a height of max 2mm. Use the cutting tool supplied with the removal kit. The adhesive on the old window must also be cut down to max 2mm if it is to be refitted. Old, well-adhered glue provides a good base for the new adhesive. Loose adhesive on glass and metal surfaces must be removed.







2. Remove loose particles and dirt from the metal flange with a vacuum cleaner.
3. Repair any paintwork damage as follows:
- Scrape off any loose flakes of paint with a knife.
- Clean using Teroson cleaning agent FL.
- Apply primer. Use Standox 1K Fullprimer.
- Apply the finish coat.

IMPORTANT: The paintwork must be kept intact so that rust does not form. An insufficient repair to paintwork can also lead to layers of paintwork flaking under the adhesive bead.

4. If the old adhesive is missing or is not intact, apply primer to the painted surfaces of the tailgate with which the adhesive comes into contact. Use Betaprime 5061 (green).

IMPORTANT: Never apply body primer on old adhesive. Body primer must only be used if old adhesive is missing.

5. Position the lifting handles on the outside of the window and place the window on a stand to obtain a suitable working height.
6. Apply Betawipe 4001 (blue), which is included in the adhesive kit. Do not use any other cleaner. Wet the edge carefully. Dry it with the lint-free cloth included in the adhesive kit. Avoid touching the surface.
7. Apply the adhesive as follows:
- Cut off the tip of the glue cartridge nozzle to obtain a suitable shape.
- Adjust the pressure of the glue gun.
- Hold the gun at right angles to the window and apply a bead of adhesive on the encapsulation around the rear window. Make sure there are no gaps in the adhesive.

IMPORTANT: The adhesive starts to cure as soon as the contents of the two tubes is mixed. Fit the window glass within 5 minutes of starting to apply the bead of adhesive.







8. Put the window in place. Start by positioning it at the top using the window guide pin.
9. Fit the nuts holding the window.

Tightening torque: 3 Nm (2.2 lbf ft)







10. Plug in the electric connectors and fold down the contact plates around the flange.
11. Cars with spoiler:







11.a. If necessary, replace the spoiler clips with new ones.
11.b. Make sure the seals are in place.
11.c. Fit the spoiler and tighten the nuts and washers.

12. Fit the wiper motor and the rear wiper arm.







13. Fit the luggage compartment trim.







14. Fit the door pull.
15. Fit the side cover inside the tailgate.
16. Press on the trim moulding at the top edge on the inside.
17. Fit the parcel shelf.
18. Carefully close the tailgate without locking it.
19. Allow the adhesive to dry before continuing to work. Betaseal X 2500 hardens in 1 hour at 23 degrees C and 50% relative humidity.
20. Clean the windscreen both inside and out.
