Audio System

The main unit and CD changer (CDC) on the Saab 9-3 are equipped with a new type of theft protection. The main unit and CD changer are both connected to the I bus. When the main unit and CD changer are first installed, they are married to the vehicle. This is a process which is performed by means of Tech 2. During the marriage the main unit and CD changer identify the theft protection information from the vehicle. From this moment in time the main unit and CD changer will only work in this particular vehicle. Consequently, no radio code is needed in the Saab 9-3.

This also means that if the main unit and CD changer are removed from a Saab 9-3 and are not to be refitted in the same vehicle, they must be divorced from the vehicle before being removed.

NOTE
- If the main unit or CD changer is DIVORCED, SID will show "RADIO CODE" or "CDC CODE" on being activated. See Main unit.
Radio/Stereo
- If the main unit or CD changer is still married to another Saab 9-3, the SID will show "RADIO LOCKED" or "CDC LOCKED respectively on being activated. In order to divorce one of the units by means of Tech 2, the unit must be installed in the vehicle to which it is married. See Main unit.
Radio/Stereo

IMPORTANT
The main unit and CD changer must be divorced before they are returned for repair under warranty. The suppliers cannot divorce them and will invoice for all units linked together that are sent to them.

Audio System:

The audio system consists of the central main unit and several external units, and interacts with other systems in the car.

Activation
The audio system is turned on/off by pressing the volume control knob. When switched on, the system starts with the last settings active.
The system can be activated irrespective of the ignition switch position, even if the key has been removed (+B information goes via the bus).
If the ignition is turned OFF but the key remains in the lock, the audio system stops automatically 1 hour after the last activation of a button. This applies even if the audio system is turned on when the key is not in the ignition.

Control functions
The main unit contains control buttons for the system. Certain buttons are specific to the unit concerned but others are general controls:

General control buttons:
1 Audio system on/off
2 Source selection in audio system
3 Volume
4 Bass
5 Treble
6 Balance
7 Fader
8 Mute

IMPORTANT
This Service Manual does not cover the normal operation of the audio system. Detailed information on its operation is given in the Owner's Manual.
