Procedure
NOTE:All wires should be placed so that they are protected from wear. The wires should be secured in place with duct tape.
1. Be sure to have the radio code available.
2. Remove both front seats according to WIS; 8. Body; Seats/Front seat.
3. Detach the cables from the battery.
4. Remove the air distribution duct for the rear floor.
5. Remove all scuff plates from the door sills.
3D: Detach the lower seat belt anchorage point.
6. Remove the upholstery from the B-pillar, see WIS.
3D: Remove the rear side upholstery, see WIS.
7. Remove the ignition switch's cover plate by first loosening the plate's back edge and the front part of the left side. You may then unhook the forward edge.
8. Remove the floor console's retaining screws.
9. Remove the rear ashtray.
10. Remove the rear cover with adjustable air vent and the antenna module for the alarm remote.
11. Remove the floor console's mounting nuts.
12. Loosen the floor console by pulling directly rearward and lifting up a bit.
13. CV: Loosen the interior light switch using a screwdriver or push up from underneath, where the switch is retained by a clip, and pull it directly upwards. Disconnect the switch's connector.
14. Remove the window switch assembly and disconnect it.
15. Lift away the floor console.
16. Remove the glove box.
17. Remove the lower part of the instrument panel, the air ducts, and the knee protector.
18. Remove the covers and the switches from the steering column.
19. Remove the instrument plate, see WIS.
20. Remove the right and left side panels from the center console.
21. Cars with manual gearbox: Remove the gear lever gaiter using a screwdriver. The gaiter is held in place by clips.
22. Cars with ACC: Push the ACC module out from behind and disconnect it.
23. Cars without ACC: Remove the panel with the heating/ventilation controls.
a Push the heater control panel out from behind.
b Detach the air distribution spindle from the air distribution control.
c Disconnect the connections for the ventilation control lighting, fan speed, rear window defroster and air recirculation.
d Detach the cable to the heater control from the ventilation control panel. The cable is held in place with an eyelet and locked by a lock washer.
e Remove the heater control panel.
24. Remove the center console, see WIS.
25. Disconnect all of the connectors to the center console.
26. Remove the expansion rivets that fasten the console to the instrument panel by pushing the center pin in about 3 mm and pulling out the rivet
27. Remove the center console.
28. Remove the center air duct.
29. Remove the main instrument display panel.
30. Lift and fold back the floor carpeting.
31. Disconnect the connector from the SRS control unit.
Note
Do not cut off the ground connector wire.
32. Cut off the old connector. Fold and tape the wire ends back against the old wiring harness. Leave out the black/white wire, which will be measured later according to step 51.
33. Connect the new connector to the control unit and the ground wire to the grounding point.
Important
Be careful not to damage the connector pins.
34. Run the new wiring harness from the SRS unit to the seat belt tensioners.
Run the wires marked with yellow tape on the passenger side. Place the harness alongside the existing harness in the cable channel to the B-pillar.
CV: Run the new harness behind the seat cross-member and tape it to the floor.
5D: Fold together and tape any extra length of wire to the existing harness.
35. Disconnect the connectors from the seat belt tensioners and cut off the old connectors. Fold and tape the ends against the old harness using duct tape.
36. Plug in the new connectors to the seat belt tensioners.
37. Run the new wire harness alongside the existing one along the center console.
38. Run the new harness alongside the existing one up to the passenger airbag.
39. Disconnect the connectors from the passenger airbag and cut off the old connector. Fold and tape the wire ends against the old harness.
40. Plug the new connector into the passenger airbag.
41. Run the new harness alongside the existing one up to the main instrument cluster.
42. Main Instrument Unit 1 (MIU 1), with mechanical odometer: NON-US SPECIFICATION. Note the wire colors in this step that will not be used on US cars.
a Model year 95: Remove pin 8 from the black connector housing.
Model year 96-98: Remove pin 7 from the black connector housing. Cut off the terminal. Fold and tape the ends of the wire back against the old harness.
b Model year 95: Insert the brown wire in position 8 in the connector housing.
Model year 96-98: Insert the brown wire in position 7 in the connector housing.
c Tape and insulate the remaining blue and blue/brown wires to the wiring harness.
43. Main Instrument Unit 2 (MIU 2), with electronic odometer (USA/CA):
a Remove the terminal from position 2 in the black connector housing.
Cut off the terminal. Fold and tape the end of the wire back against the old harness.
b Insert the new harness terminal with the blue and brown/blue wires in position 2 in the connector housing.
c Remove the terminal from position 26 in the black connector housing.
Cut off the terminal. Fold and tape the end of the wire back against the old harness.
d Insert the terminal with the red/blue wire in position 26 in the connector housing.
e Insulate and tape the remaining brown wires to the wire harness.
44. Run the black/white wire out along the existing harness to the 4-pole center connector above the ICE module.
45. Remove the relay panel.
46. Remove the ICE module.
47. Remove the center connector.
48. Remove the black clutch cover.
49. Measure with an ohm-meter between the black/white wire next to the SRS control module and the crimp connector. Remove the terminal that shows continuity.
50. Cut off the existing wire and tape it to the wire harness.
51. Insert the new wire in the connector housing.
52. Refit the clutch cover.
53. Refit the connector.
54. Refit the relay panel and the ICE module.
55. Refit the main instrument display panel.
56. Remove the fuse panel at the end of the dash.
57. Run the new harness along the existing one up to the fuse panel.
Place the blue/red wire along the existing harness on the outside of the relay panel/ICE. Continue along behind the relay panel forward to the fuse panel.
58. Remove the blue/red terminal to fuse 18. Cut off the terminal. Fold and tape the end of the wire back against the old harness.
59. Insert the new terminal with the blue/red wire in position 18.
60. Run the new harness alongside the existing one up to the driver air bag.
61. Disconnect the driver's air bag connection at the coil spring.
Cut off the connector. Fold and tape the ends of the wires back against the old harness.
62. Connect the new connector to the coil spring.
WARNING
Make sure that nobody is in the car when the battery is connected.
63. Connect the battery.
64. Connect Tech 2 and erase any diagnostic trouble codes.
Check that no new diagnostic trouble codes appear.
65. Refit the instrument plate, see WIS.
Reconnect the connectors.
Note
White connector to the instrument panel lighting.
Black connector to the rear fog lamp.
Green connector to the fog lamps.
66. Refit the rear air distribution duct.
67. Refit the carpet
68. Refit the glove box, see WIS.
69. Place the center console in its place over the gear lever.
70. Refit the knee protector, switches and steering mechanism cover to the steering column.
71. Refit the lower portion of the instrument panel.
72. Refit the expansion rivets that fasten the console to the instrument panel. Do not tighten the rear mounting screw, it also holds the floor console.
73. Reconnect all of the connectors to the center console.
Note
Orange connector to the right seat heater.
Yellow connector to the left seat heater.
74. Cars with ACC: Connect the ACC module's connector and push in the module.
75. Cars without ACC: Refit the cable to the heater controls on the ventilation control module. The cable is held in place with an eyelet and secured by a lock washer.
76. Reconnect the connections for the ventilation control lighting, fan speed, rear window defroster and air recirculation.
77. Reattach the air distribution spindle to the air distribution control.
78. Refit the heater control panel.
79. Cars with manual gearbox: Refit the gear lever gaiter (attach using clips).
80. Refit the right and left side panels by pushing in the guide sections of the respective parts on the center console and fitting the retaining screws.
81. Pass the floor console over the handbrake. Just set the console into position.
82. Pass the connectors for the window switch pack and interior lighting (cabriolet) through the holes for the respective units.
83. Reconnect the window switch pack's connector and refit the switch pack.
84. CV: Reinstall the interior light switch assembly.
85. Tighten the floor console's retaining screws and mounting nuts.
86. Place the rear cover in place, make sure that the air duct connects properly to the air vent.
87. Refit the ashtray.
88. Refit the ignition switch cover plate.
89. Refit the antenna module for the alarm remote.
90. Refit the upholstery to the B-pillar.
91. Refit all scuff plates.
92. Refit both air ducts for the rear seat.
93. Refit both front seats according to WIS; 8. Body/Seats/Front seat
94. Start the engine and check that the airbag warning lamp does not light up.
95 Check and erase any diagnostic trouble codes in the SRS.
96. Set the SID and enter the radio code.
