Scrapping Pyrotechnical Seat-belt Tensioners





WARNING: When scrapping seat-belt tensioners the minimum safety distance is 5 metres. Work on seat-belt tensioners should be carried out only if you have read the safety instructions and acquainted yourself with the legislation applicable in the country concerned.

The seat-belt tensioner should be activated by means of the detonating device, part No. 84 71 104 (B), and cable assembly, part No. 86 11 469 (A).

1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery and cover the negative terminal.
2. Remove the B pillar trim.
3. Remove the plastic cover over the seat-belt tensioner and unplug the tensioner's electric connector.
4. Plug the connector (A) on the detonating device (special tool, part No. 84 71 104) into the seat-belt tensioner's connector.




5. Check that the belt runs freely and can be pulled back about 180 mm without catching on anything.
6. Run the detonating device to the engine bay. Close all doors and windows.
7. Connect the detonating device's clamps (B) to the battery terminals.
8. Stand in front of the car and press the firing button.
