Procedure
The driver's seat has only one lever with a cable system, while the passenger seat has a lever on each side with separate cable systems. Make sure the passenger back rest can be tipped forward using both levers.The following directions are for fitting a cable spacer to the outside of the passenger seat but they can also be followed when fitting on the inside of the passenger seat and on the driver's seat.
1 Remove the seat concerned from the car. See "8. Seats, Adjustment/replacement, Front seats".
2 Cut the staples securing the bottom of the backrest upholstery.
3 Release the two upholstery rods holding the front of the upholstery taut by bending out the metal tabs.
4 Fold and pull up the upholstery.
5 Cut the three staples on the side of the seat where the cable spacer is to be fined.
6 Press in a cable spacer 49 03 431 between the two cables. It must be fitted at right angles to the cables.
7 Make sure that both hooks are fully engaged when the backrest is in its upright position.
WARNING
Should this action not address the customer complaint, perform the following:
^ Change the entire cable system.
^ Always make sure that both the locking function and the release function on the backrest are functioning correctly.
^ Do not fit the cable spacer if the cable system is replaced with a new one.
8 Fit three new staples on the side on which the cable spacer was fitted. Use upholstery fitting kit 84 71 062.
9 Hook on the two upholstery rods and secure with the metal tabs.
10 Secure the bottom of the upholstery with staples.
11 Fit the seat in the car. see "8. Seats, Adjustment/replacement, Front seats".
