Noise when operating the soft-top, alternatively cracks in the rear window

Cars affected

Saab 900 CV M96 to VIN W7007622 inclusive with:
^ rear window mounted with clips
^ two guides fitted to fifth bow

Background

There is a risk that the plastic rear window guides will crack or chip due to the edge of the steel rear window-frame being too sharp. Very high or very low temperatures will have an effect on the wear experienced.

Damaged guides can cause noise when the soft-top is operated and may crack or break the rear window. Rectify after customer complaint.

Parts required

46 97 272 Guides (2 pcs.) (CA: 30565257)

Procedure

1. Raise the soft-top so that the fifth bow is vertical.

2. Remove the two guides.

3. Protect the rear window by covering it with a sheet of cardboard, for example. Also, protect the fifth bow seal and the roof cloth around the location of the guides.

4. Place extra protection such as a piece of sheet metal where the edge is to be rounded.

5. Round off the edge of the frame where the two guide run. Use a grinder with a very fine grinding stone.

6. Using fine-grain sand paper, sand the guide until the edge feels even.

7. Remove the piece of sheet metal. Clean away grindings and degrease this area. Touch up with matt black paint.

8. Remove the protection when the paint has dried.

9. Fit two new guides, part no. 46 97 272.

10. Lower the soft-top.
