Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair






NOTE:
^ Step numbers below refer to numbers used in the illustrations.
^ In vehicle.

1. Relieve the belt tensioner of strain, using a ratchet handle extension, and insert a 6 mm drill, or equivalent, in the hole as shown.
- Exercise the utmost care to ensure that the belt tensioner does not break at its end position.
2. Raise the car, take off the right-hand front wheel and remove the cover.
3. Remove the protective plate and install flywheel locking segment tool No. 83 94 868, or equivalent, on the flywheel ring gear.
4. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
5. Use a screwdriver to break off the old seal.
6. Install a new seal, using assembly tool No. 83 94 876, or equivalent.
7. Install the crankshaft pulley, then tighten to: 175 Nm (129.5 lbs. ft).
8. Install the drive belt.
- Check the position of the belt on all pulleys and install the cover.
9. Install the road wheel, tighten wheel bolt to: 120 Nm (89 lbs. ft).
10. Lower the car to the floor.
11. Relieve the belt tensioner of strain, using a ratchet handle extension, and remove the drill.
12. Start the engine and run it at idling speed for a short while.
- Then switch it off and check that the drive belt is correctly positioned.
