CD Changer - Inoperative
SI No 367-1761PI No.
Date April 1997
Distr. USA, CA

CD changer inoperative on M97 Saab 900
Cars affected
Saab 900 convertible with OE CD changer, M97
Saab 900 models with accessory CD changer, M97
Background
A customer complaint of an inoperative CD player may require that the radio head be replaced. During M97 there was a running change made to the micro-processor in the Clarion radio head that inadvertently causes the CD changer to lock up and show no text on the display. Because this change is incorporated in the radio itself, this problem can affect both OE CD changers in 1997 convertibles as well as accessory CD changers installed in any 1997 900 model.
Material
Clarion radio: 42 24 929 (CA: 30549911)
Procedure
1. If you receive a customer complaint of a CD changer that will not function and there is no CD text on the radio display, you can request a radio from the Clarion exchange bank following the standard procedures in the Warranty Policy and Procedures Manual section 5.7. Clarion will ship an exchange radio overnight which has been upgraded to correct this problem.
2. Make an appointment for the customer to come in.
3. Confirm the customer has the problem. If the customer has a CD changer and you press the CD button on the face of the radio, you should see a CD-related message appear on the [1][2]Saab Information Display (SID).
Note
If the customer does not have a CD changer, no CD-related message will appear on the SID display and this problem will have no other effect on the operation of the customer's radio.
4. If the customer has a CD changer and no CD- related message appears on SID, slide the radio out using the red/silver radio removal tools, P/N 02 73 706.
5. Check the last 8 digits of the radio serial number on the white paper sticker on top of the unit. If the unit is in the corresponding range, Clarion serial number T2051881 - T2074980, remove the radio from the car.
6. Tape the radio code card to the top of the unit.
7. Pack the unit in the Clarion padded shipping box and return it within 24 hours to Clarion.
Note
You can easily identify radios within this serial number range that have already been upgraded by Clarion. These units will have a black "dot" on the serial number label located on top of the radio. Also, the number "1" will be marked on a label located on the rear of the unit. Radios above this serial number range have already been modified by Clarion and are not marked in any way.
Dealer cars in stock
If you have a pending sale and the car and radio are in the affected serial number range, you can request a Class A replacement from Clarion as specified in the Warranty Policies and Procedures Manual, section 5.7. Clarion will ship a Class A radio overnight that has been upgraded to correct this problem.
We will issue further information in the near future by DCS on how to get radios for all the affected 900 models that you have in inventory. Due to the volume of cars and daily capacity of the Clarion Tech Centers, we will have to stagger the exchange of these units in different areas.
Important
Please return all radios that need to be upgraded to Clarion within 24 hours. This will help assure that a supply of radios will be available to keep this program on schedule for everyone. Be sure to include the code card with the unit.
