P0410

SECONDARY AIR INJECTION, INCORRECT FLOW





Fault Symptom.
CHECK ENGINE lamp (MIL) on.

Conditions For Diagnosis.
^ The secondary air injection system was activated at the start of this trip.
^ Diagnosis not yet performed this trip.
^ Speed = 0.
^ Idling.
^ Closed loop active.
^ Engine coolant temperature below 65°C.

Conditions For Diagnostic Trouble Code Generation.
P0410 (large flow):
Closed loop greater than 25% for 20 seconds.

P0411 (small flow):
Secondary air injection pump running and closed loop increases by less than 15 percentage points within 12 seconds.





Diagnostic Help.
The secondary air injection pump relay can be activated with the ISAT scan tool.
- Select "ACTIVATE".
- Select "SECOND. AIR RELAY".

The command activates the relay at a frequency of 0.5 Hz for 30 seconds.

The secondary air injection control valve can be activated with the ISAT scan tool.
- Select "ACTIVATE".
- Select "SECONDARY AIR, VALVE".

The command activates the valve at a frequency of 0.5 Hz for 30 seconds.

Check The Wiring.
Intermittent faults may occur as a result of temporary short circuits and breaks in the wiring. Jiggle the wiring at several points and in different directions to ascertain whether the wiring harness, including any connectors, is causing the trouble. Observe the multimeter, ISAT scan tool or test lamp while doing this.





Diagnostic Procedure.
1. Check other diagnostic trouble codes in the Motronic system
- Obtain readouts of the diagnostic trouble codes with the ISAT scan tool.

Does the ISAT scan tool show diagnostic trouble code P0412, P0413 or P0414?
YES: Rectify and carry out a final check for the diagnostic trouble code in question.
NO: Continue with point 2.

2. Check the fuses
- Check maxi fuse 3 for the secondary air injection pump.

Is the fuse intact?
YES: Continue with point 3.
NO: Change the fuse and activate the secondary air injection pump relay with the ISAT scan tool.

If the pump works:
Continue with point 11

If the fuse blows on activation of the relay:
Continue with point 10.





3. Check the performance of the secondary air injection pump

- Connect the ISAT Scan Tool.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Select "ACTIVATE".
- Select "SECOND. AIR RELAY'.

The command activates the pump relay at a frequency of 0.5 Hz for 30 seconds.

Is the pump working?
YES: Continue with point 8.
NO: Continue with point 4.

4. Check the relay socket's power supply

- Remove the secondary air injection pump relay.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Connect the test lamp to:
^ relay socket pin 30 and battery negative (B-).
^ relay socket pin 66 and battery negative (B-).

The test lamp should light up.

Did the test lamp light up?
YES: Continue with point 5
NO: Check the appropriate lead and repair or replace it if necessary. Then continue with point 11.





5. Check the control module output

- Connect a test lamp to battery positive (B+) and relay socket pin 85.
- Connect the ISAT Scan Tool.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Select "ACTIVATE".
- Select "SECOND. AIR RELAY".

The test lamp should flash at a frequency of 0.5 Hz for 30 seconds.

Test lamp flashing?
YES: Continue with point 6
NO: Check the appropriate lead and repair or replace it if necessary. Then continue with point 11.

6. Check the secondary air injection pump relay

- Connect a jumper lead between relay socket pins 30 and 87.

The pump should start working.

Is the pump working?
YES: Change the relay and continue with point 11.
NO: Continue with point 7.





7. Check the secondary air injection pump

- Unplug the pump's 2-pin connector.
- Connect the test lamp to:
^ pins 1 and 2 of the female connector.
- Connect a jumper lead between:
^ pins 30 and 87 of the relay socket.

The test lamp should light up.

Did the test lamp light up?
YES: Change the pump and continue with point 11.
NO: Check and if necessary repair or replace the lead between:
^ pin 87 of the relay socket and pin 1 of the female connector.
^ Pin 2 of the 2-pin connector and grounding point G30. Then continue with point 11.





8. Check the hose system

- Disconnect one of the hoses connected to the exhaust manifold's non-return valves
- Disconnect the hose from the secondary air injection control valve and connect it to a vacuum pump. The hose 4 on the side facing the vacuum valve.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Select "ACTIVATE".
- Select "SECOND. AIR RELAY".
- The pump should work but it should not blow at into the thick hose.
- Use the vacuum pump to build up a vacuum.

The pump should now blow air into the hose.

Is the system OK?
YES: Continue with point 9
NO: Change the vacuum valve and continue with point 11.





9. Check the secondary air injection control valve

- Disconnect the vacuum hose from the secondary air injection control valve's inlet pipe and connect a vacuum pump to the valve.
- Use a vacuum pump to check that the valve does not leak.
- Connect the ISAT Scan Tool.
- Ignition switch in the ON position.
- Select "ACTIVATE".
- Select "SECONDARY AIR VALVE".

The command activates the valve at 0.5 Hz and the vacuum that was present in the vacuum pump should then disappear.

Is the system OK?
YES: Continue with point 11.
NO: Change the secondary air injection control valve and continue with point 11.





10. Check the secondary air injection pump for shorting

- Unplug the pump's 2-pin connector.
- Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
- Select "ACTIVATE".
- Select "SECOND. AIR RELAY".

Did the fuse blow again?
YES: Check and if necessary repair or replace the wiring between pin 87 of the relay socket and On 1 of the pump's 2-pin connector.
NO: Change the secondary air injection pump and then continue with point 11.





11. Final check

Use the ISAT scan tool to activate diagnosis of the secondary air injection system. For diagnosis to be carried out, the following conditions must be fulfilled:
^ The secondary air injection system must have been activated at the start of this trip.
^ Diagnosis not yet performed this trip.
^ Speed = 0.
^ Idling.

Carry out diagnosis:
- Connect the ISAT Scan Tool.
- Clear the fault codes.
- Select "INITIATE".
- Select "SLS DIAGNOSIS".
- Wait for about two minutes or until the ISAT scan tool reads "READY".
- Obtain a readout of the diagnostic trouble code.

Has the diagnostic trouble code recurred?
YES: Continue at "Before Replacing a Control Module". Component Tests and General Diagnostics
NO: The steps taken to rectify the fault were correct.
