KNOCK SENSOR, CYL BANK 1 (REAR)

Fault Symptoms.
CHECK ENGINE lamp (MIL) on.
Engine performance may be down, continuous retardation of the ignition
timing.

Conditions.
^ Engine temperature above 45°C.
^ Engine speed above 2000 rpm.
^ Voltage variations too small having regard to engine speed.

Diagnostic Help.

Check The Wiring.
Intermittent faults may occur as a result of temporary short circuits and breaks in the wiring. Jiggle the wiring at several points and in different directions to ascertain whether the wiring harness, including any connectors, is causing the trouble. Observe the multimeter, ISAT scan tool or test lamp while doing this.

Diagnostic Procedure.
1. Check the knock sensor's ground connection

- Unplug the knock sensor's 2-pin connector.
- Connect a test lamp to battery positive (B+) and pin 2.

The test lamp should light up.

Did the test lamp light up?
YES: Continue with point 2
NO: Repair or replace the lead between pin 2 and crimped connection J14. Then continue with point 3.

2. Check the control module's knock sensor input

Take a resistance reading on the connector contacts (towards the control module).
- Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.,
- Take a resistance reading across pins 1 and 2 in the 2-pin connector.

The resistance should be about 1 MOhm.

Is the reading obtained OK
YES: Check whether the bolt securing the knock sensor is loose.
- If it is:
Tighten it to a torque of 22 Nm. Then continue with point 3.
- If it is not loose:
Change the knock sensor. Then continue with point 3

NO: Check the lead in question and repair or replace it if necessary. Then continue with point 3.

3. Final check
- Clear the diagnostic trouble code.
- Implementation of driving cycle:
^ Drive the car at varying engine loads and rpm for 5 minutes..
- Evaluation of driving cycle:
^ Check whether the diagnostic trouble code has recurred.

Has the diagnostic trouble code recurred?
YES: Continue at "Before Replacing a Control Module". Component Tests and General Diagnostics
NO: The steps taken to rectify the fault were correct.
