C. Steering Column Assembly Replacement

WARNING!
Never strike the steering wheel adjustment device to knock the steering wheel loose. The steering column assembly's collision safety joints could be damaged.

1. Make sure that the steering wheel is turned so that the front wheels are in the straight ahead position.

2. Remove the steering wheel.

3. Remove the coil spring, the two retaining bolts and the connectors. See Figure 5.

4. Remove the switch. Also remove the direction indicator and windshield wiper stalk switches as well as the tie strap from the bearing housing.

5. Remove the locking bolt from the steering column's universal joint and slide the U-joint off the pinion shaft. See Figure 5.

6. Remove the steering column assembly's lower retaining bolt above the air duct.

7. Remove the upper retaining nuts under the dashboard.

8. Lift out the steering column assembly.

9. Position the new steering column assembly and screw on the two upper retaining nuts by hand until the steering column assembly mounting butts up against the dash framework.

10. Fit the steering column universal joint on the pinion shaft and install the locking bolt. See Figure 6.

11. Lock the adjusting handle.

WARNING!
It is important to ensure that the upper retaining nuts are tightened first and then the lower bolt. This order of tightening is important to avoid undesirable stresses arising in the steering column.

12. Use a torque wrench to tighten the two upper retaining nuts.

Tightening torque: 17.8 ft.lbs. (24 Nm)

13. Fit the retaining bolt above the air duct and tighten it using a torque wrench.

Tightening torque: 17.8 ft.lbs. (24 Nm)

14. Fit the knee shield and the lower dashboard section. See Figure 7.

15. Refit both stalk switches and the fixing cable.

16. Turn the coil spring to the end position and then back 2.5 turns. See Figure 7.

17. Fit the steering wheel and tighten the nut, using a torque wrench. Note the locating groove in the steering wheel mounting. See Figure 7.

Make sure the steering wheel is on straight.

Tightening torque: 22.1 ft.lbs. (30 Nm)

18. Test drive and verify that steering is centered.
