Listed below are corrections to programming instructions appearing in Service Manual 8:5 Cabriolet, pages 102-103. Please place a copy of this important information in this service manual to assist you in future top mechanism programming and cross off values indicated in the Service Manual.
Cars Affected:
1995 900 Convertible
Action:
The SAT Top Stack Actuation System (TSAS) programming menu asks you to accept or change the values programmed into each vehicle's top ECM. If just one of these twelve (12) values is wrong, it can result in a top that does not operate smoothly, or in some cases, will not operate at all. This bulletin will show you how to determine what the proper values should be.
NOTE:
If you have to change a top stack ECM, whenever possible record all existing values as a reference before changing the unit.
You will be checking three different drive mechanisms whose motions are tracked by potentiometers. They are:
^ Main Motor
^ Tonneau Motor
^ 5th Bow Motor
Before attempting to establish communications with ISAT for TSAS diagnostic purposes, unlatch both front latches and press any window switch before hitting ENTER on ISA7: This will alert the TSAS ECM that its services are required. Having the latches open keeps the ECM alert. If you do not do this, ISAT will not be able to contact the TSAS ECM because it goes to "sleep" after 3 seconds of inactivity.
NOTE:
Only values recorded in bold boxes should be used to program.
Before doing any programming, always lower the rear seat back to avoid the possibility of driving the rear window glass into the head rests when moving the top with the ACTIVATE function on ISAT.
1. Place the top in the fully UP position but unlatched. Briefly press the roof switch to the rear to unlatch the 5th bow. Refer to Figure 1.
The 1st bow is unlatched using the 2 manual latches above the windshield and the 5th bow is unlatched electrically by momentarily pushing the roof switch in the console towards the rear.
2. Check that the 1st bow guide pins are level with the top of the openings in the windshield header. If necessary, perform mechanical adjustment of TOP STACKSTOP POSITION as indicated on page 116 of Service Manual 8:5 Cabriolet.
NOTE:
Only values recorded in bold boxes in this bulletin should be used to program.
3. Even though the 1st bow is already at the windshield header, use the ACTIVATE menu on SAT to drive the MAIN MOTOR all the way up. (You will hear the motors run briefly and the top may move slightly). This is to ensure that the value you read is the HIGH LIMIT.
Use ISAT to read and record values, using the READ VALUES menu. [ ] (reg. box)
4. Even though the hard Tonneau Cover Is closed, use the ACTIVATE menu on ISAT to drive the TONNEAU MOTOR all the way down. This is to ensure that the value you read is the LOW LIMIT
Use ISAT to read and record values, using the READ VALUES menu. [ ] (reg. box)
5. Even though the 5th bow is sitting on the hard Tonneau, use the ACTIVATE menu on ISAT to drive the 5TH BOW MOTOR all the way down. This is to ensure that the value you read is the LOW LIMIT
Use ISAT to read and record values, using the READ VALUES menu. [ ] (reg. box)
6. Using the three values listed above, CALCULATE AND RECORD LIMITS using the formulas listed below:
MAIN MOTOR HIGH LIMIT: value recorded above minus 3 [ ] (bold box)
TONNEAU MOTOR LOW LIMIT: value recorded above plus 1 [ ] (bold box)
5TH BOW MOTOR LOW LIMIT: value recorded above [ ] (bold box)
Transfer the 3 values calculated to the chart at the end of this bulletin.
7. Push roof switch in center console forward to latch 5th bow. The top should be completely up at this point (1st bow latches unlatched).
Use ISAT to read value for POT POS 5TH BOW MOTOR LOW LIMIT and record value. [ ] (bold box)
If this value if different from value recorded in step 6, use this value in the chart at the end of this bulletin.
8. Partially lower the top to position shown in Figure below using the roof switch in center console.
9. Use ACTIVATE menu on SAT to drive TONNEAU MOTOR and 5TH BOW MOTOR all the way up. This will position these 2 drives in their HIGH LIMIT POSITIONS.
Use ISAT to read and record these values:
TONNEAU MOTOR HIGH LIMIT: [ ] (reg. box)
5TH BOW MOTOR HIGH LIMIT: [ ] (reg. box)
Using these HIGH LIMITS, CALCULATE and RECORD as follows:
TONNEAU MOTOR HIGH LIMIT= value recorded above minus 5 [ ] (bold box)
5TH BOW MOTOR HIGH LIMIT= value recorded above minus 2 [ ] (bold box)
Transfer these two values to the chart on the last page.
10. Lower the top completely using roof switch in the center console.
NOTE:
Make sure the switch is held for at least 3-5 seconds after it appears all top action has stopped. This will ensure TONNEAU latch operation has been completed and programming can take place properly. The Tonneau Motor continues to move after the Tonneau is closed to pull the cables that close the latches.
11. Use the ACTIVATE menu on SAT to drive the MAIN MOTOR all the way down.
12. Change SAT to READ VALUES and read MAIN MOTOR values.
Record the information for LOW LIMIT [ ] (reg. box)
CALCULATE MAIN MOTOR LOW LIMIT: value recorded above plus 1. [ ] (reg. box)
Transfer this value to the chart at the end of this bulletin.
NOTE:
Normally the OVERLAP values are fixed and should not need to be changed. If you encounter a problem with two moving components coming into contact with each other, or if the rear window is contacting the rear seat headrest, these steps can be used to establish basic OVERLAP LIMITS that will allow the top to function.
13. To obtain OVERLAP values:
NOTE:
If any values change back and forth while you are reading them from ISAT for high limits select the lower of 2 numbers; for low limits select the higher of 2 numbers.
MAIN MOTOR:
Press the roof switch in the center console forward until the top is lifted and the fabric edge of the 1st bow is 1 meter from the forward edge of the trunk lid. See Figure.
Read and record value using ISAT.
This value equals the MAIN MOTOR OVERLAP HIGH LIMIT. [ ] (bold box)
CALCULATE MAIN MOTOR OVERLAP LOW LIMIT:
Main Motor Overlap High Limit recorded above minus 6. This value equals the MAIN MOTOR OVERLAP LOW LIMIT. [ ] (bold box)
5TH BOW MOTOR:
Push roof switch so top goes up and fabric edge of 5th bow and trunk lid edge are 30cm apart. See Figure.
Read and record value using ISAT
This value equals the 5TH BOW MOTOR OVERLAP LOW LIMIT. [ ] (bold box)
CALCULATE 5TH BOW MOTOR OVERLAP HIGH LIMIT:
5th Bow Motor Overlap Low Limit recorded above plus 6.
This value equals the 5TH BOW MOTOR OVERLAP HIGH LIMIT. [ ] (bold box)
Transfer the four (4) OVERLAP values from this page to the chart at the end of this bulletin.
14. Using the PROGRAMMING menu on ISAT, PROGRAM the values you have previously calculated using the chart.
NOTE:
IF THE NUMBERS FOR A NEW PROGRAM ARE SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER THAN THE NUMBERS FOR THE EXISTING PROGRAM, ISAT MAY NOT ACCEPT THE NEW OVERLAP HIGH LIMIT. IF ISAT REFUSES TO TAKE THE NEW VALUE, PRESS THE FUNCTION BUTTON UNDER "OK" TO ACCEPT THE ORIGINAL VALUE. THIS WILL ALLOW YOU TO MOVE ON AND ENTER THE NEW OVERLAP LOW LIMIT AND LOW LIMIT VALUES. RE-ENTER THE PROGRAM MENU. YOU WILL NOW BE ABLE TO PROGRAM THE NEW HIGH OVERLAP LIMIT.
15. Exit from the TSAS system using the END command. Cycle the ignition "OFF" and then back "ON" again. Contact TSAS again, call up the PROGRAMMING menu, and verify that all programming has been properly performed. If any of the values differ from the values you entered in the previous step, change the programming value again, and be sure to use the END function of the TSAS main menu.
16. Operate the top through a complete down and up cycle. The SID should beep once at the completion of each cycle.
