INSPECTEach backrest frame should be attached with two weld lines on each side; four weld lines per seat.
Using the method below, check that the seat backrest frame is attached with two weld lines on each side as illustrated in Figure 1.
1. Move the seat to its front end position.
Driver's seat and electrically operated seats:
2. Raise the seat as far as possible.
3. Lift up the back support upholstery and check that the backrest frame is attached with a continuous weld on the front edge. See Figure 1.A.
4. Tilt the backrest cushion forward, lift up the backrest upholstery and check that the backrest frame is attached with a continuous weld on the rear edge. See Figure 1.B.
5. If any of these four welds is missing. the backrest frame should be changed as described on the following pages. If all welds are present, the car should be left alone.
After the car has been inspected (even if no repair is necessary) or modified, mark the campaign plate in position "C2" using a numeral "8" (Saab special tool P/N 02 97 713). Order this special tool directly from Kent-Moore at 1-800-34-2233.
REMOVING THE SEATS IN ORDER TO CHANGE THE SEAT BACKREST FRAME:
1. Lower the seat as far as it will go.
IMPORTANT

2. Slide the seat forward and remove the rear retaining bolts. See Figure 2.B.
3. Slide the seat rearward and remove the front retaining bolts. See Figure 2.C.
4. Snip through the cable ties on the wiring and unplug the seat connector.

19. Remove the protective sheet from the backrest frame. See Figure 6.B.
20. Remove the edging strips from the backrest frame. See Figure 6.C.
21. Remove the belt clip. See Figure 6.D.
22. Five-door cars:
Remove the belt end stop from the seat
23. Three-door cars:
IMPORTANT
In order to ensure that seat folding works properly, it is important that the cable is fixed in the same position when refitting.
Note the position of the ties that hold the backrest folding cable and then snip off the ties. Keep the washers from the clip attachments in the backrest frame. See Figure 6.E.
Passenger seats are equipped with double folding handles and thus also have double folding cables.
24. Note the position of the springs securing the elastic mat and then remove the springs and the mat. See Figure 6.F.
The springs are different and should be refitted in the same places so as not to diminish lumbar support.
25. Three-door cars:
a. Remove the locking washers securing the ends of the folding cable. See Figure 7.A.
b. Detach the cable holders at the ends of the cable. See Figure 7.B.
c. Detach the cable holder at the folding handle. See Figure 7.C.
d. Drill out the rivets that secure the folding handle and lift away the handle and cable. See Figure 7.D.
26. Seats with memory feature:
a. To make measurement possible. remove the screws that secure the backrest angle motor bracket See Figure 7.E.
b. Measure the angle of the backrest as illustrated and note the reading. See Figure 7.F.
IMPORTANT
The angle of the backrest must be the same when fitting as when removed so that the potentiometer is able to sense the position of the backrest frame and give the correct reading to the control module. If the control module receives incorrect readings, it may damage the backrest angle motor when adjusting the angle of the backrest.
27. Electrically operated seats:
a. Remove the clips securing the backrest angle motor wiring harness. See Figure 7.G.
b. Remove the screws securing the backrest angle motor bracket and remove the bracket on the other side. Cover the seat cushion and place the motor on the cover. See Figure 7.H.
28. Remove the shaft. See Figure 7.1.
29. Remove the gear parts. See Figure 7.J.
30. Remove the screws that secure the backrest frame. See Figure 7.K.
31. Three-door cars:
Rivet the folding handle to the new backrest frame. See Figure 8.A.
32. Place the backrest frame in position and tighten the screws. See Figure 8.B.
Tightening torque: 49 Nm (36 ft.lbs.).
33. Place the gear portion in place. See Figure 8.C.
34. Seats with memory feature (see Figure 8.D):
Adjust the angle of the backrest as illustrated to the value that was noted when removing it. The reading should be 12 mm.
IMPORTANT
The backrest frame must have the same angle when being fined as when removed so that the potentiometer which senses the position of the backrest frame can give the right reading to the control module. If the control module receives an incorrect reading, it can damage the backrest angle motor when adjusting the angle of the bracket.
35. Electrically operated seat (see Figure 8.E):
Make sure the seat is parallel by measuring dimension A, so that it is the same on both sides of the backrest frame. This measurement should be 10.3mm.
IMPORTANT
The backrest frame must be parallel within the tolerance limits, so that the backrest frame does not move at an angle and cause damage to the gear parts.
36. Fit the shaft in position. See Figure 8.F.
37. Electrically operated seats:
a. Place the backrest angle motor in position and tighten the bolts. See Figure 9.A.
b. Secure the wiring harness with a clip. See Figure 9.B.
c. Fit the bracket on the other side. See Figure 9.C.
38. Three-door cars:
a. Clip on the folding cable holder at the folding handle and hook on the cable. See Figure 9.D.
b. Press the ends of the cable into the holders. See Figure 9.E.
c. Place the ends of the wire in position and clip on the locking washers. See Figure 9.F.
