Subject:
Correcting Complaint of Headliner Dragging
Application:
1995 900 Convertible
To correct customer complaints that the headliner drags or catches when the top is either being raised or lowered, follow the instructions listed in this bulletin. Another symptom will be that the headliner pulls over the rivets at the C-pillar.
Parts:
Rivet 82 35 178
Plastic cover 46 29 093
Action:
1. Be sure the top ECM has been correctly programmed. If top is programmed with incorrect overlap values, an excessive amount of strain can be put on the rivets securing the headliner causing them to bend or pull out. If the rear window is coming in direct contact with the rear headrests, try lowering both high and low fifth bow overlap values by 3 points each. Whatever is done to one overlap value must also be done to the other overlap value. Rivet, P/N 82 35 178 can be used to replace the OE rivets. After drilling out the rivet, you will have to increase the hole size to 5mm.
NOTE:
Be sure that the rear portion of the rivet has adequate clearance with the balance link in the C-pillar as the top folds. If necessary, flatten the shank on the rear of the rivet to provide adequate clearance.
2. In order to help the headliner material glide over the upper rear seat belt anchor points, install a "press on" plastic cover, P/N 46 29 093 on the mounting bolt for both upper anchor points.
3. If the headliner bunches up and gets caught as the top moves over the rear seat back, stitching the elastic gathering strap to the vertical headliner seam will help to pull the headliner out of the way as the top mechanism folds. See Figure 3.
