3. Fixing the Center Side Seal's Rubber Strip

If water leakage occurs at the joint between the front and center side seals, or between the center and rear side seals, the seal can be stretched and fixed as described below so that higher pressure is obtained at the points of contact.

Important
It is important for this work to be carried out with the highest possible degree of precision to ensure good results.

Cars Affected:

S7000001 -S70261 30

Parts:

Nut (2 per side) 79 77 911
Bolt (2 per side) 69 59 464
Tape 46 95 870

Procedure:

a. Operate the top to the halfway open position.

b. First mark the positions of the dome nuts so that the rubber strip can be refitted in the same place.

c. Remove the rubber strip from the holder.

d. Remove the dome nuts. Carefully work the holder loose from the rail without damaging the underlying tape. If the tape is damaged, it must be replaced.

e. Remove clips D (see Figure 10) and scrap them.

f. Drill two holes in each end of the holder, using a 1/4" (6 mm) drill bit at the distances shown in Figure 10. Be careful to drill on the center line C (see Figure 10) of the holder. Then enlarge the holes with a file until they are elongated.

g. Fit the rubber strip loosely on the holder and mark the holes. Mark the hole 5132" (4 mm) from the inner edge so that the seal can subsequently be adjusted outward if necessary.

h. Drill 5/32" (4 mm) holes in the rubber strip where marked so that they align with the center of the rubber strip.

i. Cut the bolts to a length of 1/2" (13 mm) and fit them in the holes drilled in the seal. See Figure 11.

j. Lubricate the rubber strip with soap solution and insert it into the groove in the holder.

k. Join the seal and holder together and tighten the seal in the elongated holes in the holder, as shown in Figure 13.

Do not tighten so hard that the rubber is compressed.

Tightening torque: Max. 5in.lbs. (0.5Nm)

l. Fit the holder to the top, tighten the seal at the previously marked positions.

m. Raise the soft top and check that it does not leak. If it is still leaking, adjust the side seal against the window and stretch the rubber strip inn the rail by moving the attachments in the oval holes. See Figure 11.
