Subject:
Adjustment of Tonneau Cover Latches

Application:
1995- 900 Convertible

When adjusting the Tonneau cover latches on 1995- 900 Convertible models, please follow the procedures below and the instructions.

Place a copy of this bulletin in Service Manual 8:3 Cabriolet, page 114. Use only the Information contained in this bulletin when adjustments prove necessary.

Cross out manual page 114. The latches shown are not those used on production vehicles and can be misleading.

Before making any adjustments to the Tonneau cover latches, take a few moments to review the following points. Start with the top down and the Tonneau cover latched.

^ It is a good idea to go in and outline the latch assembly with a felt pen so you have a baseline setting to fall back on should you experience difficulty during your efforts to adjust the latches.

^ How much clearance do you have between the bottom edge of the Tonneau cover and the top of the cross-member behind the rear seat?

Passenger side:___________ Driver's side: ____________

^ Both microswitches should close at approximately the same time and certainly must be closed after the latches have been pulled down. The best way to check their operation is to go into the ISAT "READ SWITCHES" menu and watch the readouts change from OPEN to CLOSED as the Tonneau cover closes. Did the passenger side switch close? _______ Did the driver's side close? ________ Did they close simultaneously? _______

^ Raise the Tonneau cover a few inches. The horizontal latch pins on the Tonneau cover should clear the latch "fingers" as the cover moves up and down. Did the passenger's side make contact? _______ The driver's side? _______

^ If needed, reset the latches using the procedure outlined in this bulletin.

Cars Affected:

1995- 900 Convertible

Action:

1. Remove the side panels and fold the seat back down.

2. Verify that the microswitches are functional by using the ISAT "READ SWITCHES" menu as mentioned on the previous page. In addition to hearing an audible click as you manually operate the switches, you should also see the ISAT readout change.

3. Identify which side needs adjustment. The problem may show up as too much or too little clearance between the Tonneau cover and the body or as a "CHECK SOFT TOP" message on SID. ISAT will tell you which switch is not closing properly.

4. Do your adjustment one latch at a time. Do not try both at once. Raise the Tonneau cover part way and loosen the two nuts holding the latch in place until the latch will slide under gentle pressure. Do not move the latch far from its original position.

Lower and latch the Tonneau cover using the top switch on the console. As the latch arm locks in place it will pull the latch into the proper position. Press down gently on the Tonneau cover and carefully tighten the two nuts. Tightening torque = 22 N-m (15 ft.lbs.). Take care not to move the latch.

5. Cycle the Tonneau cover up and down a few times to ensure that the latch does not bind against the Tonneau cover latch pin. A binding latch will be indicated by a metallic click or failure to smoothly latch or release the Tonneau cover.

NOTE:
When adjusting the latch, always rotate the latches slightly forward before tightening the nuts.

6. Repeat the adjustment on the other side if necessary.

7. Cycle the top up and down. It should move smoothly through its entire travel and park at either end with a single confirming "BEEP". If there is a problem in either the adjustment or the ECM programming, SID will give a double beep (pling-plong) and display a "CHECK SOFT TOP" message.

8. If the switch and latch function is correct but the top does not operate properly, or SID keeps displaying warning messages, you should check the programming as outlined in PSI 08/94-0495 (Sec. 8, p. 92).

9. Reassemble and verify latch operation.
