2. Fixing the Front Side Seal's Rubber Strip

If water leakage occurs at the windshield frame seal/front side seal joint, or at the joint between the front and center side seals, the seal can be stretched and fixed as described below so that higher pressure is obtained at the points of contact.

Important
It is important for this work to be carried out with the highest possible degree of precision to ensure good results.

Cars Affected:

S7000001-S7026130

Parts:

Nut (2 per side) 79 77 911
Bolt (2 per side) 69 59 464
Tape 46 95 870

Action:

a. Operate the top to the halfway open position.

b. First, mark the positions of the dome nuts so that the rubber strip can be refitted in the same place.

c. Remove screw A (see Figure 8).

d. Remove the rubber strip from the holder.

e. Remove screw B (see Figure 8) and the dome nuts. Carefully work the holder loose from the rail without damaging the underlying tape. If the tape is damaged, it must be replaced.

f. Remove clips D (see Figure) from the holder and scrap them.

g. Drill two holes in each end of the holder, using a 1/4" (6 mm) drill bit at the distances shown in Figure 10. Be careful to drill on the center line C of the holder (see Figure B). Then enlarge the holes with a file until they are connected and elongated.

h. Fit the rubber strip loosely on the holder and mark the holes. Mark the hole 5/32" (4 mm) from the inner edge of the elongated holes so that the seal can subsequently be adjusted outward if necessary. See Figure 8, point E.

i. Drill or punch 5/32" (4 mm) holes in the rubber strip where marked so that they align with the center of the rubber strip. See Figure 8, point F.

j. Out the bolts to a length of 1/2" (13 mm) and fit them in the holes drilled in the seal.

k. Lubricate the rubber Strip with a little soap solution.

l. Fit the seal and the hold together. Tighten the seal in the elongated holes in the holder as shown In Figure 9.

Do not tighten so hard that the rubber is compressed.

Tightening torque: Max. 5in.lbs. (0.5 Nm)

m. Press the strip onto the holder from point C to point D (see Figure 9).

n. Fit the holder onto the top and screw on the dome nuts in the previously marked positions.

o. Fold aside the rubber strip and insert screw B in its previous position (see Figure 9).

p. Press the strip onto the remaining part of the holder, from point D to point E (see Figure 9).

q. Tighten screw A.

r. Raise the top and see that it does not leak. If it still leaks, adjust the side seal against the window and stretch the rubber strip in the holder by repositioning the mounting points in the elongated holes. See Figure 9.
