Gear Selector Shaft Seal - Leaks

Correcting Leakage Around Gear Selector Shaft

Application: 1994- 900 and 9000 Models with Manual Transmission





It is possible that on certain 1994 and later 900 and 9000 models equipped with manual transmissions that the seal on the gear selector shaft may leak. This has been remedied in production by fitting an improved seal. To Correct an in-use vehicle leak, follow the steps outlined below and in this bulletin.

Locking Pin 87 92 335

Pin Press 87 91 394

Press Tool 87 91 709

The above tools are not currently on the list of essential tools. Check your supplies and order from Kent-Moore (1-800-345-2233) as needed.

Action:





See Figure 2.

1. 9000 model: Remove the intake pipe from between the throttle body and the resonator/charge air cooler.

2. Clear the area around the gear selector shaft, engage 4th gear and fit locking pin P/N 87 92 335. See Figure 2.A.

3. 900 Model: Remove engine covers (V6). Undo the M8 bolt on the gear selector shaft and move the gear lever to 3rd. See Figure 2.B.

9000 model: Remove the taper pin using removing tool P/N 87 91 394 and move the gear lever to 3rd. See Figure 2.C.

4. Carefully pry out the seal using a thin screwdriver. See Figure 2.D.

IMPORTANT
Do not damage the sealing surface on the gear selector shaft.

5. Clean the gear selector shaft and check that there are no sharp burrs.

6. Wind thin, smooth tape once around the hole in the gear selector shaft. See Figure 2.E.

7. Fill the back side of the seal with grease, lubricating the sealing surface and slide the seal over the gear selector shaft. Remove tape and tap in seal using tools P/N 87 90 685 and P/N 87 91 709. See Figure 2.F.

8. Assemble gear selector shafts using the M8 bolt (900) or the taper pin (9000). See Figure 2.B.

9. Check, using the appropriate service manual, that the gear position is aligned with gear lever. Remove locking pin and fit protective plug. See Figure 2.A.

10. 9000 Model; Fit intake pipe between throttle body and resonator/charge air cooler.

900 model: Refit engine covers (V6).

11. Check oil level in gearbox and top up if necessary.
