Support - Half Shaft/Short Shaft: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the drive shaft on the righthand side.
3. Remove the lower alternator bolt (1).
4. Twist the alternator outwards slightly (2).
5. Undo the support bearing bracket retaining bolts (3).
IMPORTANT: Place a receptacle under the gearbox to collect the oil that will run out.
6. Move the support bearing bracket off the locating studs on the engine block (4) and withdraw the intermediate shaft from the gearbox.
7. Clamp the intermediate shaft in a vice.
8. Remove the large circlip securing the bearing in the support bearing bracket (5).
9. Press the bearing out of the housing with the intermediate shaft, using puller 87 91 287 (6).
10. Remove the O-ring and circlip securing the bearing on the shaft (7).
11. Press the bearing off the intermediate shaft, using puller 87 91 287.
INSTALLATION
1. Use special tool No. 78 41 067 and install the new bearing in the support bearing bracket (8).
2. Install the circlip.
3. Use sleeve (9) No. 78 41 067 and press the bearing bracket with bearing onto the shaft.
4. Install the circlip and sealing ring. Make sure that the circlip is fitted the right way round (10).
5. Install the support bearing bracket and intermediate shaft correctly in the body.
6. Install the support bearing bracket on the locating studs (6).
7. Install the bolts and tighten them (7).
8. Move the alternator back into position (2), install the alternator bolt (1) and tighten it.
9. Install the drive shaft.
10. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
