IMPORTANT: Scrupulous cleanliness must be observed during all work on drive shafts and drive shaft joints to prevent dust and dirt getting into the joints. Before starting work, always clean the wheel arch, MacPherson strut and other areas round the drive shafts and joints.
NOTE: The numbers found below in parenthesis ( ), refer to that number (and that part/component) found in the illustration.
REMOVAL
1. Remove the dust cap and slacken the hub center nut (do not remove it completely).
2. Raise the car and remove the wheel.
3. Remove the hub center nut (1).
4. Remove the ball joint nut (2).
5. Remove the ball joint, using special tool 89 96 696 (3).
6. Unscrew the anti-roll bar nut (4) and collect the washer and rubber bush and press the spring link down.
7. Tap the drive shaft out of the hub, using a rubber mallet.
8. Move the MacPherson strut aside and withdraw the drive shaft. Take care to avoid stretching brake hoses and sensor cables. Place a receptacle under the gearbox to avoid oil spilling onto the floor.
9. Use special tool 89 96 654 to remove the driveshaft joint from the gearbox. (Use special tool 87 92 376 on cars with Rzeppa drive shaft joints.)
INSTALLATION
1. Position the inboard universal joint in the gearbox mounting. Using a rubber mallet, tap the constant velocity joint until the drive shaft is secured in place.
2. Move the MacPherson strut aside and position the drive shaft in the hub.
3. Press the spring link down and install the ball joint in the steering swivel member. Tighten the ball joint.
Tightening torque: 75 Nm (55.4 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the anti-roll bar's bush, washer and nut A.
Tightening torque: 10 Nm (7.4 ft. lbs.).
5. Install the wheels and tighten the wheel bolts.
Tightening torque: 105 - 130 Nm (77.5 - 95.9 ft. lbs.).
6. Lower the car to the floor.
7. Install the hub center nut and tighten it.
Tightening torque: 290 Nm (214 ft. lbs.).
IMPORTANT: Always install a new nut if the hub center nut has been slackened or removed as it is of self-locking type and should not be reused.
8. Install the dust cap.
9. Top up the gearbox with oil.
