Valve Body: Service and Repair
NOTE: Component identifier numbers used in the following illustrations relate to specific steps in the procedures below.Removal
1. On models with 6-cylinder engines, remove the engine covers.
2. On all models, remove the transmission's breather hose.
3. Hook a suitable lifting beam onto the engine and raise the car.
4. Remove the air deflectors.
5. Remove the engine mount retaining bolts.
6. Remove the ground cable and engine mount bracket's retaining bolts.
7. Place an oil pan under the transmission and remove the cooling hoses.
- Plug the holes and bend the hoses aside.
8. Remove the bolt securing the temperature sensor's cover (and also the valve housing cover).
9. Remove the 8 remaining bolts.
10. Lift up the valve housing cover and turn it to the right of the engine mounting.
- Use a rubber mallet to knock the cover loose.
11. Remove the nine valve housing retaining bolts.
NOTE:
^ Start with the two retaining bolts at bottom left which secure the cover to the fluid channels.
^ The channels are filled with transmission fluid.
^ Save the two upper retaining bolts for last.
^ The bolts are of 3 different lengths.
12. Carefully remove the selector lever's manual valve from the retaining eye and carefully lift out the valve housing.
NOTE: Make sure that the two O-rings installed inside the valve housing do not fall out.
Installation
1. Thoroughly clean the sealing surfaces on the valve housing cover and transmission, leaving no residue of old sealing compound.
2. Lift the valve housing into position.
NOTE: Carefully move the selector lever's arm into place and install the valve housing on the transmission.
3. Install the nine valve housing retaining bolts and tighten them.
- Tightening torque: 7 Nm (60 inch lbs.).
NOTE: The bolts are of three different lengths.
4. Apply a bead of sealing compound to the transmission's sealing surface.
NOTE:
^ Make sure that all fluid has been carefully wiped off the surface so that the sealing compound will adhere properly.
^ Smear the entire sealing surface with a thin and even layer of sealing compound.
^ If the transmission has been removed, the sealing compound can be applied to the sealing surface of the cover.
5. Install the cover.
6. Install the cover in place with the 8 retaining bolts, except the bolt securing the temperature sensor's cover.
Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18.5 ft. lbs.).
7. Install the temperature sensor's cover.
Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18.5 ft. lbs.).
8. Connect the hoses to the transmission.
- Make sure that they do not rest against the subframe.
9. Install the bracket for the engine mount.
10. Connect the ground cable.
11. Install the engine mount.
12. Install the air deflectors.
13. Lower the car and remove the lifting beam.
14. Connect the breather hose.
15. On models with 6-cylinder engines, install the engine covers.
16. On all models, fill up with transmission fluid.
17. Warm up the engine and transmission.
- Check the fluid level and operation of the transmission.
