Transmission Cooler: Service and Repair

NOTE: Component Identifier Numbers Used In The Following Illustrations Relate To Specific Steps In The Procedures Below.

WARNING: Always wear protective gloves.

CAUTION:
- Incorrect connection may cause damage to the transmission since the fluid filter incorporates a nonreturn valve which will prevent the fluid from circulating in the transmission.
- Furthermore, the fluid cooler will not be cleaned if the equipment is not connected correctly.

NOTE: Connect flushing equipment tool No. 87 91 824, or equivalent, to the cooling circuit in such a way that the fluid flows through the circuit in the reverse direction.

1. Oil the sealing surface of the adapter plate with DEXRON II and install a new fluid filter.
2. Connect one of the hoses in the kit to the outlet on the bottom of the adapter plate (opposite side to the fluid filter).
3. Raise the car and remove the lefthand air deflector.
4. Disconnect the delivery hose from the transmission's lower outlet and connect it to the outlet on the side of the adapter plate (inlet).
5. Disconnect the return hose from the transmission's upper outlet and connect the hose installed to the bottom of the adapter to the transmission's upper outlet.
6. Connect the return hose from the fluid cooler to the remaining hose in the kit and connect it to the lower outlet on the transmission.
7. Fill the transmission with fluid, start the engine and check the connections for leakage.

8. Apply the hand brake and depress the brake pedal.
9. Move the selector lever to position D and run the cleaning process for 5 minutes.
10. Disconnect the hose from the lower outlet on the transmission and separate the fluid cooler hose from the cleaning kit hose.
11. Disconnect the cleaning kit hose from the transmission's upper outlet and connect the return hose from the fluid cooler to it instead.
12. Disconnect the delivery hose from the outlet on the side of the adapter plate (inlet) and connect it to the transmission's lower outlet.
13. Make sure that the hoses do not rest against the subframe. Install the air deflector and lower the car to the floor.
14. Check the engine oil level and transmission fluid level and top up as necessary.
