Subject:
New Adhesive for Glass Installation

Application:
All 900 Convertible
1994-900
All 9000 Models

To reduce downtime due to long glue curing times when replacing glass on a Saab, a new two-component adhesive has been introduced. This new adhesive is called BETAMATE E-2400 and needs to harden for at least four hours at a temperature of 730°F and 50% relative humidity. At lower temperatures and lower relative humidity, the adhesive hardens at a slightly slower rate. If proper curing occurs, this glue has the same adhesive quality as the previously recommended glue.

Because BETAMATE E-2400 is a two component adhesive, it must be applied with a special glue gun, the Betagun.

BETAMATE E-2400 adhesive is to be used for installing:

^ the windshield on 900 Convertibles (all)

^ the windshield and rear glass on 9000 models

^ the windshield and rear glass on 1994-900 models

Because the windshield adds considerable torsional rigidity to the car body and is important for occupant safety in the event of a crash, it is very important that these instructions be carefully followed and that proper curing of the glue occurs before driving the car. Proper curing is particularly importar1t on cars with airbags due to the increased pressure on the windshield during an airbag inflation. Failure to follow these instructions could cause the windshield (or rear glass in the 9000) to separate from the car in a crash jeopardizing occupant safety.

NOTE:
BETAMATE E-2400 is the only two component adhesive that has been collision-tested and approved by Saab Automobile AB. Only BETAMATE E-2400 can be used when replacing windshield glass on models listed above. Your glass subcontractors should be given a copy of this bulletin and be advised as to the importance of following Factory recommendations.

Cars Affected:

900 Convertibles
9000 models
1994- 900 models

NOTE:
Betawipe 4000 plastic primer, P/N 30 15 278, is discontinued as a separate spare part. It is replaced by a complete adhesive kit for encapsulated window glass (9000 CS rear glass, 1994-900 rear glass) which includes Betawipe 4000. The part number for this new kit is P/N 30 05 618. Betaseal Adhesive, P/N 30 16 045 is also discontinued and is no longer offered in separate tubes. Please make a note of these new part numbers in PSI 10/92-0265 (Sec. 1, p. 24) until it can be superseded.

Parts:

BETAMATE E-2400 Adhesive Kit for windshields 30 05 600
BETAMATE E-2400 Adhesive Kit for rear glass 30 05 618
Betagun Glue Gun (110V) (All) 82 92 989*

Action:

BETAMATE E-2400 must be used in accordance with the methods described in Service Manuals 8:1 "Body, body work repairs" M1985-93 and 8:5 "Convertible" M1986-1990-. However, please note the following:

^ The glass primer should dry for ten minutes before the adhesive is applied.

^ The adhesive begins to harden as soon as it and the hardener are mixed so you must fit the glass in place no longer than five minutes after you have applied the bead of adhesive.

NOTE:
Any damage to the paint must be repaired as described below to prevent future corrosion from occurring. If paintwork is inadequately repaired, it may lead to paint peeling away in layers (delamination).

1. Scrape off any loose flakes of paint carefully.

2. Wash the area with a cleaner (such as Sherwin-Williams' AQUA-MATE W4-157 low VOC).

3. Apply primer.

4. Apply the finishing paint.

5. Apply Betaprime 5402 paint primer, P/N 30 18 702.
