As an enhancement to the ABS system, a diagnostic function has been integrated within the ABS electronic control unit (ECU) on all 1990- 900 and 9000 models. This self-contained system has the ability to monitor faults in the ECU and from its peripheral components (i.e. wheel sensors, solenoid valves). The fault codes are then stored in the ECU memory for retrieval at a later time.

The codes are displayed as four-digit flashes of the ANTI-LOCK warning lamp in the instrument cluster when the read out procedure is initiated. The flash codes correspond to a fault code listing (see page 3 of this P.S.I.) which indicates the possible faulty component and the corrective action that should be taken. Since the self-contained diagnostic system monitors the ABS system rather than actually testing the components, it must be used in conjunction with the ABS Tester.
