Overhaul






DISASSEMBLE
1. Clamp the MacPherson strut in a vice. Compress the spring, using tool No. 88 18 791 and holder No. 88 18 809, or equivalents.
2. Grip the piston rod and remove the nut, using special tool 89 96 662. This nut is of self-locking type and must not be reused.
3. Remove the mounting and top spring seat.
4. Remove the coil spring, gaiter and compression stop.
5. Unscrew the damper, using special tool No. 89 96 670, or equivalent.
6. Lift the damper out of the strut.





ASSEMBLE
1. Inspect the gaiter and bushes for damage.
2. Screw the damper in place, using special tool No. 89 96 670, or equivalent.
Tightening torque: 215 Nm (158.7 ft. lbs.).
3. Install the coil spring in place. The lower end of the spring should abut against the stop in the bottom spring cup.
4. Install the upper spring seat (with the protruding lug positioned as shown) and the mounting in place. Make sure that the lower washer is fitted the right way round (with the part No. facing downwards). Grip the piston rod and tighten the nut, using special tool No. 89 96 662, or equivalent.
5. Undo the spring press (part Nos. 8818 791 and 88 18 809, or equivalent).
