Replacement
NOTES:
- On air bag equipped vehicles, refer to Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems), Service Precautions. Air Bag Systems Also refer to Service and Repair, Arming and Disarming.
- The numbers found below in parenthesis ( ), refer to that number (and that part/component) found in the illustration.
REMOVAL
1. Remove the steering wheel (1).
WARNING: Never tap the steering wheel off by striking the steering wheel adjustment device, as this might damage the collision safety joints in the steering column assembly.
2. Remove the upper and lower sections of the steering wheel cowling (2).
3. Remove the coil spring and two retaining screws and unplug the connectors (3).
4. Remove the switch. Also remove the direction indicator and windshield wiper stalk switches as well as the fixing cable from the bearing housing.
5. Remove the lower part of the dashboard (4).
6. Remove the knee protection member's two retaining bolts and remove the knee protection member (5).
7. Remove the locking bolt from the steering column shaft's joint and lift the joint off the pinion shaft (6).
8. Remove the steering column assembly's retaining bolt above the ventilation duct.
9. Undo the retaining nuts under the instrument panel.
10. Lift out the steering column assembly.
INSTALLATION
1. Position the steering column assembly and introduce the two retaining bolts.
2. Install the steering column shaft joint onto the pinion shaft.
3. Lock the adjusting lever.
4. Tighten the two retaining bolts.
IMPORTANT: Note the bolt groove in the shaft.
5. Install the retaining bolt above the ventilation duct.
6. Install the lower part of the dashboard.
7. Install both switches and the fixing cable.
8. Turn the coil spring to its end position and then back it off two and a half turns.
9. Install the steering wheel and tighten the nut, using a torque wrench.
Tightening torque: 30 Nm (22.1 ft. lbs.).
IMPORTANT: Note the locating groove in the steering wheel mounting.
