The starter motor used on both the 900 and 9000 models is a gear reduction starter. This starter, Fig. 1, uses six permanent magnets in place of conventional wound field magnets to reduce electrical and starting resistance. The gear reduction system uses a planetary gear train to transmit armature rotation to the pinion shaft.
