Action
1. Remove the press stud securing the rear left-hand corner of the top well lining inside the cabin.2. Undo the spare wheel and lift it out.
3. Remove the license plate lights and disconnect the leads. See Figure 1-3.
4. Remove the mercury switch. See Figure 1-2. Save the screw, washer and clip.
5. Unplug the connector for the central locking motor. Carefully mark the leads, noting their positions in the connector. Remove the leads from the connector and tape them together. See Figure 1-1.
6. Cut the three cable ties securing the wiring at the trunk lid and hinge arm. See Figure 1-4.
Remove the clip on the hinge arm and the one in front of the hinge.
Save the clips.
7. Unplug the connector for the high-level brake light. See Figure 1-5.
8. Carefully remove the wiring from the trunk lid.
9. Wrap tape around the sharp edges of the mercury switch connector so that it will pass easily through the cable sheathing.
10. Locate the black lead for the interior lighting at the connectors at the front of the trunk wiring by the inner side panel. See Figure 2-3.
Pull the lead out of the sheathing.
11. Refit the wiring in the trunk lid, reconnect the brake light and license plate lights.
Refit the leads in the connector for the central locking motor, brown/white lead to brown/white lead and blue lead to violet lead.
12. Secure the ground lead for the license plate lights with the screw, washer and clip previously used for the mercury switch.
13. Adjust the position of the wiring for the trunk lid. Attach it with cable ties.
Attach two of the cable ties at the markings on the hinge arm. Attach the wiring to the grounding point for the license plate lights in the trunk lid with the third cable tie.
Refit the clips, one on the hinge arm and the other on the upper edge of the inner side panel just in front of and above the hinge arm mounting point. (See Figure 4.)
14. Remove the sealing strip for the trunk lid, beginning at the joint in the middle of the wiring and continuing all the way up to the top left corner.
Remove the screws from the cover over the rear bumper abutment and left-hand side trim.
Remove the cover and fold back the side trim as much as possible.
15. Pull the lead for the interior lighting through the front hole in the inner side panel.
Secure the lead along the side panel up to the hole using approximately l5Omm of insulating tape. Then run it alongside the antenna cable, continuing along the lead for the electric antenna as far as the left-hand rear light cluster.
Wrap the surplus lead with insulating tape.
16. Measure and mark the point on the rear bumper sill where the two holes for the switch are to be drilled (see template).
IMPORTANT:
Remove all drilling shavings from the trunk.
17. Attach clip P/N 79 68 001 on the switch. Mount the switch using screws P/N 85 77 793. Hold the switch from underneath so that it does not turn and trap the push rod in the hole.
Connect the interior lighting lead.
Check the operation of the switch.
18. Refit the side trim, the cover over the rear bumper sill and sealing Strip.
19. To ensure reliable operation, the rubber stops on the trunk lid must be replaced. Unscrew the old rubber stops from the trunk lid and attach the new ones, P/N 43 04 234.
Adjust the stops so that the trunk lid closes correctly.
20. Put the spare wheel back in place and secure it.
21. Refit the press stud securing the top well lining at the top left-hand corner in the cabin.
