SRS - Wiring Harness Installation

CATEGORY: Electrical

SECTION: 3

PAGE: 74

ISSUE: 08/94-0493

CODE: 371

Subject:
Installing Wiring Harness for SRS

Application:
-1993 900
-1994 900 Convertible

To repair a recurring complaint of the SRS lamp being lit, or when the harness has been damaged, separate spare part wiring harnesses have now been made available. Because the SRS wiring harness should never be spliced, minor collision damage could previously have resulted in the need to replace the entire main wiring harness. The new separate wiring harnesses were produced to simplify repairs and reduce their costs.

These harnesses are designed specifically to repair problems that generate Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) OE S. OF S, 10 S, 11 S, 12 S, 13 S and 14 S. Follow the steps below to install these harnesses. Also be certain you have reviewed the diagnostic procedures in Service Manual 8:6 Airbag to make certain that it is indeed necessary to replace the harnesses.

Cars Affected:

900 models - 1993
900 Convertible models - 1994

Parts:

Wiring harness for LH front sensor 46 63 019
Wiring harness for RH front sensor 46 63 027
Removal tool 85 80 110

The last three points eliminate the need to wait 20 minutes after disconnecting the battery before detonating the airbag, as pointed out in the Safety and handling instructions in Service Manual 8:6 Airbag.

If a connector is unplugged while the ignition is switched on, the control module will record this as a fault in the system. The "fault" will not disappear until the connector is plugged in again and the DTC has been cleared.

Action:

1. Remove the loudspeaker griddle on the driver's side.
2. Loosen the expansion tank (raise it slightly) and remove the intake snorkel.
3. Unplug the LH front sensor connector.
4. Follow the wiring along to the bulkhead and cut it off at the rubber grommet.

Remove the wiring harness.

5. Plug the new wiring harness connector into the LH front sensor.
6. Run the wiring harness along where the old wiring was and fasten it in place.
7. Insert the wiring harness through the bulkhead.
8. Introduce a length of steel wire by the loudspeaker and fish up the wiring harness.
9. Unplug the old wiring harness from the control module.
10. Plug the new wiring harness into the control module.
11. Refit all parts that have been removed. Clear any DTCs that have been generated.

IMPORTANT
Test drive the car and check that the SRS lamp goes out.

Action:

1. Remove the loudspeaker griddle on the driver's side.
2. Remove the radio compartment.
3. Cut the three or four cable ties holding the old wiring harness to the dashboard.
4. Unplug the RH front sensor connector.
5. Remove the wiring from the clamp and all the way up to the rubber grommet.
6. Plug the new wiring harness connector into the RH front sensor.
7. Run the wiring harness along where the old wiring was and fasten it in place.
8. Cut the old wiring harness about 300 mm (12") from the rubber grommet leading into the cabin.
9. Remove the pins from the 4-pin connector on the new wiring harness. Insert the pins into the sleeving of the old wiring harness and tape the two wiring harnesses together.
10. Spray the wiring harness with silicone spray. Unplug the old wiring harness from the control module and use it to pull the new wiring harness along to the control module.
11. Remove the tape from the two wiring harnesses and fit the pins back into the 4-pin connector. Be careful to fit the pins in the right positions in the connector.

Pin 1 = BK/WH
Pin 2 = BN/WH
Pin 3 = GY/WH

12. Plug the new wiring harness into the control module. Fit new cable ties in place of those that were cut loose.
13. Refit all parts that have been removed. Clear any DTC's that have been generated.

IMPORTANT
Test drive the car and check that the SRS lamp goes out.
