Wiper System

Windshield wipers
General
1 Check that fuse 31 in the main fuse box in the dashboard is intact and live.
M1995: Use the Intelligent Saab Tester (ISAT) scan tool to check how the Integrated Central Electronics (ICE) module is programmed for the parked wiper position.
2 Plug in the ISAT scan tool and select "READ FAULT CODES" from the menu. If any diagnostic trouble codes are present, continue in Trouble Code Tables.
3 Check that a 12 V power supply is present between:
- windshield wiper switch connector pin 6 and switch ground.
- windshield wiper motor connector pin 5 and motor ground.
- relay holder position G, pins 86 and 87.

4 If no 12 V power supply is present as checked in point 3, check the wiring for continuity/shorting by taking readings between:
- fuse 31 and pin 6 of the windshield wiper switch connector.
- fuse 31 and pin 5 of the windshield wiper motor connector.
- relay holder position G, pins 86 and 87.

Intermittent wiper operation
1 Check the switch and position J for intermittent wiper operation by selecting "READ SWITCHES" from the ISAT scan tool menu and then "INTERM. WINDSC. WIPR".
Read the ISAT scan tool display when the switch is moved to the intermittent operation position.
Switch in position J --> "ON"
Switch in position 0 --> "OFF"
2 If this is not the case, check that a 12 V power supply is present on pin 10 of the switch when in position J.
3 If no power supply is present, change the switch.
If a power supply is present, check the wiring between pin 39 of the ICE module connector and pin 10 of the switch connector.

4 To check intermittent wiper operation, select "ACTIVATE RELAY" on the ISAT scan tool and then "WINDSCREEN WIPER".
Intermittent wiper operation should be activated when the ignition switch is "ON". If it is not, check whether there is a power supply on pin 30 of the relay connector which changes between 0 V and 12 V when intermittent operation is activated.
If there is no power supply, the fault is in the relay. Change the relay.
5 If a power supply is present, check the wiring between pin 30 of the relay holder and pin 9 of the switch for continuity/shorting.
6 Check that a 12 V power supply is present between:
- pin 8 of the switch and a good grounding point when the switch is in position J.
If no power supply is present, install a new switch.
- pin 3 of the windshield wiper motor and a good grounding point when the switch is in position J.
- If no power supply is present, check the wiring between pin 8 of the switch connector and pin 3 of the windshield wiper motor connector for continuity/shorting.
7 If intermittent wiper operation does not work after the above checks have been carried out, the fault is probably in the windshield wiper motor. Change the wiper motor.

Important: The ICE module does not control the regular wiper system but only intermittent wiper operation.

Position 1 low speed
1 Check whether a 12 V power supply is present on pin 8 of the switch connector when the switch is in position
If it is not, install a new switch.
2 Check whether a 12 V power supply is present between pin 3 of the wiper motor connector and a good grounding point.
If it is not, check the wiring between pin 8 of the switch connector and pin 3 of the wiper motor connector for continuity/shorting.
3 If the windshield wiper does not work after the above checks have been carried out, the fault is probably in the motor. Change the wiper motor.

Important: The ICE module does not control the regular wiper system but only intermittent wiper operation.

Position 2 high speed
1 Check whether a 12 V power supply is present on pin 7 of the switch connector when the switch is in position II.
If it is not, install a new switch.
2 Check whether a 12 V power supply is present between pin 4 of the wiper motor connector and a good grounding point.
If it is not, check the wiring between pin 7 of the switch connector and pin 4 of the wiper motor connector for continuity/shorting.
3 If the windshield wiper does not work after the above checks have been carried out, the fault is probably in the motor. Change the wiper motor.

Windshield washing with intermittent operation
1 Check the switch and position P for windshield washing by selecting "READ SWITCHES" from the ISAT scan tool menu and then "WINDSOR. WASH/WIPE".
Read the ISAT scan tool display when the switch is moved to the wash position, i.e. towards the steering wheel rim.
Switch in position P --> " ON"
Switch in position 0 --> "OFF"
If this is not the case, check that a 12 V power supply is present on pin 5 of the switch when in position P. If no power supply is present, change the switch.

If a power supply is present, check the wiring between pin 38 of the ICE module connector and pin 5 of the switch connector.

2 Check whether a 12 V power supply is present on:
- the washer pump's positive (+) terminal when the switch is in Position P.
- If it is not, check the wiring between pin 5 of the switch and the washer pump's positive (+) terminal for continuity/shorting.
3 For further information about checking the washer hoses, see "Wiper and Washer System".
4 If the windshield washer system does not work after the above checks have been carried out, the fault is probably in the washer pump. Change the pump.

Headlamp wash/wipe system
General
1 Check that fuses 10 and 31 are intact and live.
2 Check that a 12 V power supply is present on:
- pin 6 of the windshield wiper switch connector.
- pin 3 of the headlamp wiper motor connector (parking circuit).
3 Check the grounding by taking a reading across pin 1 of the headlamp wiper motor connector and a good grounding point.

The resistance should be < 1 ohm.

3 If no 12 V power supply is present as in point 2, check the wiring for continuity/shorting.
4 Check the switch and headlamp wash/wipe position P as in point 3 under "Windshield washing with intermittent operation".
5 Check whether a 12 V power supply is present on pin 2 of the headlamp wiper motor connector when the switch is in position P.
If it is not, check the wiring between pin 5 of the switch connector and pin 2 of the headlamp wiper motor connector for continuity/shorting.
6 For further information about checking the washer hoses, see "Wiper and Washer System".
7 If the headlamp wiper system does not work after the above checks have been carried out, the fault is probably in the headlamp wiper motors. Change the motor or motors that do not work.

Rear window wiper
General
1 Check that fuse 8 is intact and live.
2 Plug in the ISAT scan tool and select "READ FAULT CODES" from the menu. If any diagnostic trouble codes are present, continue in Trouble Code Tables.
3 Check whether a 12 V power supply is present on:
- pin 3 of the switch connector.
- pins 86 and 87 of the connector for the rear intermittent operation relay holder.
- pin 3 of the rear wiper motor connector.
- If no power supply is present, check the wiring for continuity/shorting.
4 Check the grounding by taking a reading between pin 1 of the rear window wiper connector and a good grounding point.

Rear wiper, intermittent operation
1 Check the switch and the ON position for intermittent operation of the rear window wiper by selecting "READ SWITCHES" from the ISAT scan tool menu and then "INTERM. REARW. WIPER".
Read the ISAT scan tool display when the switch is moved to the intermittent operation position.
Switch in ON position -->"ON"
Switch in OFF position -->"OFF"
If this is not the case, check that a 12 V power supply is present on pin 2 of the switch when in the ON position. If no power supply is present, change the windshield wiper switch.
It a power supply is present, check the wiring between pin 15 of the ICE module connector and pin 2 of the switch connector.

2 To check intermittent operation of the rear window wiper, select "ACTIVATE RELAY" on the ISAT scan tool and then "REAR WINDOW WIPE".
The rear window wiper should be activated when the ignition switch is "ON".

If it is not, check whether the power supply on pin 2 of the rear window wiper motor connector changes between 0 V and 12 V when the switch is in the ON position.

If it does not, check the wiring between pin 30 of the connector for the rear intermittent operation relay holder and pin 2 of the rear window wiper motor connector for continuity/shorting.
3 If intermittent operation of the rear window wiper does not work after the above checks have been carried out, the fault is probably in the rear window wiper motor. Change the wiper motor.
