Application:
Certain 1994 900 Models and Certain early 1995 Convertible Models with 4 cylinder engine, manual transmission

Service Campaign
405

Under certain driving conditions (e.g. letting the clutch out and accelerating from a stop), the Poly-V belt can come off of the A/C compressor pulley. This is due to the fact that the low profile drive belt may not be held in its groove when the sudden torque of the A/C compressor is applied.

Replace the Poly-V belt on affected cars using the part number listed.

Saab will soon send notices to owners of affected vehicles directing them to make a service appointment to have the belt replaced. Dealers will receive the notices for vehicles in stock at the time notices are printed.

A Status List of all affected vehicles wholesaled to your dealership is attached to this PSI and should be used as a checklist to verity performance of this work.

Cars Affected:

1994 900s with 4 cylinder engine, manual transmission within the following VIN Serial No. Range: R2019839-R2045780

Early 1995 900 Convertible models with 4 cylinder engine, manual transmission within the following VIN Serial No, Range: S7000216-S7002160

NOTE:
Cars already repaired under warranty are excluded from this campaign.

Parts:

Poly-V belt 43 59 063

An initial parts order equal to 25% of the vehicles appearing on your Status List will be released automatically to you commencing October 28, 1994. Additional parts should be ordered using VOR ordering procedures.

1. If an owner has received a campaign notice, first inspect the belt installed on the vehicle. If P/N 43 60 103 or 43 95 414 is installed, or if a part number cannot be read, replace the belt using P/N 43 59 063.

5. Raise the car take off the right-hand front wheel, remove the cover and the drive belt.

To Refit:

1. Fit the drive belt and check its position on all the pulleys.

Tighten the wheel bolts:

Alloy wheels: 120 N-m (89 ft.lbs.).
Steel wheels: 89 N-m (65 ft.lbs.)

3. Lower the car to the floor. Relieve the belt tensioner of strain, using a ratchet handle extension, and remove the drill.

SERVICE CAMPAIGN 405
Poly-V Belt Replacement

Mr. James Sample
1234 Anystreet
Anytown, USA

Dear Mr. Sample:

Saab Automobile AB has determined that certain 1994 model year Saab 900 and early 1995 900 Convertible models were produced with an engine accessory drive belt that may not satisfy all necessary performance requirements. Our records indicate you are the current owner or driver of such a Saab.

The engine accessory drive belt is a ribbed serpentine belt which turns the water pump and alternator for your vehicle. Under certain conditions an incorrect belt could come loose or fall off. Should this occur, the engine will quickly overheat, and, if you did not stop and switch it off, extensive engine damage will result. Belt disengagement will also cause the battery charge warning lamp to illuminate and the power assist for the steering to become inoperative, increasing the effort needed to turn the steering wheel.

Citing this service campaign, we urge you to make an appointment with your Saab dealer as soon as possible to have your vehicle inspected and the drive belt replaced, if it is of the incorrect specification. This work requires less than 30 minutes and will, of course, be done free of charge to you during the warranty period.

Saab appreciates your cooperation and understanding regarding this situation and we will do our best, along with your dealer, to minimize any inconvenience.
