Exhaust System: Description and Operation

The exhaust system is designed to carry the exhaust gases from the engine and to have a low resistance to flow, a low noise level and a long useful life.

The system comprises four sections, front pipe with three-way catalytic converter, intermediate pipe, intermediate silencer and rear silencer. The intermediate silencer is an absorption silencer for all engine variants, while the rear silencer is an absorption silencer for the turbo version and a reflection silencer for the injector versions.

Anti-corrosion protection of the exhaust system includes all pipes being made of chromium steel. In addition, the silencers are made of corrosion-resistant 12% chromium steel plate. All engine variants have a cast exhaust manifold.

The joints are of the flared flange type (so called ballpoints) with a two-piece clamp which is pulled together with 2 screws. This facilitates replacement and makes for a good install.
