Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair
Replace Crankshaft seal at Timing Chain EndNote: Seal may be replaced with or without engine removed.
1. Remove drive belts and pulley center bolts. Immobilize crankshaft and remove pulley.
2. Remove seal by means of a screwdriver.
3. Grease the lip of the new seal.
4. Press the seal into place using sleeve 8393349 which is drawn in by means of the pulley center bolt.
5. Fit the pulley, tightening the center-bolt to the specified torque of 190 Nm (140 ft lb)
As from 1984 models, the pulley incorporates three grooves; cars with air conditioning have an auxiliary bolted-on pulley.
Use tools 83 92 961 and 83 93 639 to remove the pulley from the engine in car.
Use special spanner 83 92 961 and a torque wrench when fitting the pulley with engine in car.
To obtain the correct torque at the bolt, the tightening torque must be adapted to the length of the torque wrench.

length torque
L = 300 mm (12 in) 55 Nm (40 ft lb)
L = 400 mm (16 in) 70 Nm (52 ft lb)
L = 500 mm (20 in) 80 Nm (59 ft lb)
6. Remove the locking segment and fit the belt (belts).
