On the low emission version of the turbo equipped engine, intake air heat plates have been added to further minimize exhaust emission,
Fig. 2. The four intake air heat plates are integrated in one assembly, mounted between the intake manifold and cylinder head. During warm-up, the intake air heat plates vaporize injected fuel. This vaporization of fuel reduces the need for fuel enrichment, thereby reducing exhaust emissions. Heating of the intake air heat plates begins upon start-up and ceases when engine temperature reaches 185°F or four minutes after start-up.
There are no diagnostic trouble codes for the intake air heat plate system. When troubleshooting intake air heat plate assembly electrical circuits, refer to Fig. 3 and 4.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain engine coolant.
3. Remove charge air bypass hose, turbocharger delivery pipe and charge air cooler. Plug charge air cooler to prevent dirt contamination.
4. Remove oil dipstick tube, then crankcase ventilation and vacuum hoses from camshaft cover.
5. Remove engine lift brackets and disconnect electrical connectors.
6. Remove throttle body preheating hoses.
7. Remove engine coolant manifold to thermostat housing bolts.
8. Disconnect engine temperature sensor electrical connector at intake manifold.
9. Remove intake manifold bolts, then intake manifold and intake air heat plates.
10. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Align intake air heat plates with intake manifold and new gaskets.
b. Install air heat plate assembly and bolts, then tighten assembly bolts to specifications.
c. Check and fill engine coolant to proper level.
