Removal
NOTE:
^ Step numbers below refer to numbers used in the illustrations.
^ Cylinder head removed.
1. Remove-any burrs or carbon deposits from the tops of the cylinders.
2. Use lifting beam tool No. 83 94 850, or equivalent, and hook lifting cable tool No. 87 92 251, or equivalent, onto the gearbox. disconnect the oxygen (Lambda) sensor leads.
3. Raise the car and drain the oil.
- Remove the front exhaust pipe and take off the front wheels and spoiler sections.
4. Remove the end piece, steering swivel member on both sides, and the rear engine mounting.
- Position a lifting table under the engine, raise the lifting table, undo the other bolts and remove the sub-frame.
5. Unplug the oil level sensor connector and pull the cable out of its clamps.
6. Remove the protective plate and oil pan.
- Do not remove the guide sleeve from the cylinder block.
- Wipe off all surplus oil.
7. Remove the big-end bearing caps and fit protective sleeves Tool No. 75 19 531, or equivalent over the studs.
- Push the pistons and connecting rods out of the cylinders.
NOTE:
^ To ensure that the parts are refitted in their original positions, note the markings on the pistons and connecting rods.
^ Loosely fit the bearing shells and caps back in position on their connecting rods so that each set is kept separately and the parts are not mixed.
8. Remove the wrist pin circlips and drive out the wrist pins, using a rubber mallet and drift.
