SI No.: 260-1803 ed.2

PI No.

Date: January 1998

Distr.: all

Coolant hose aging

Cars affected

Saab 900 with 4-cylinder engine within the VIN intervals:

R2000001 - S2015760 (3D/5D)
R7000001 - S7014799 (CV)

Background

The coolant hoses on certain cars within the above VIN interval have been known to crack internally. This can be eliminated by replacing the hoses with those included in the following kits. If one hose is found to have cracked then all the hoses should be replaced by those in the kit.

Parts required

49 03 084 Hose kit LHD (CA: 30571649)

(Kit includes hoses radiator engine, radiator coolant pump and engine heat exchanger.)

Procedure

Important
Always place a receptacle under the area of the cooling system on which work is being carried out.

1. Carefully unscrew the expansion tank lid and undo the hose clamp on the lower coolant hose at the radiator.

2. Raise the car and drain the coolant. Disconnect the lower coolant hose from the radiator.

3. Undo the clamps on the hoses between the engine and the heat exchanger at the heat exchanger.

4. Lower the car and remove the coolant hoses engine radiator, radiator coolant pump and engine heat exchanger. Cut the cable ties securing the wiring harness to the coolant hose between the engine and the radiator.

5. Fit the hose clamps onto the new hoses, connect the hoses and tighten the clamps.

Tightening torque 4 Nm (3 lbf ft).

6. Fasten the wiring harness to the coolant hose between the engine and the radiator.

7. Raise the car and tighten the radiator drain plug.

Tightening torque 4 Nm (3 lbf ft).

8. Fit the hose clamps on the hoses between the engine and the heat exchanger.

Tightening torque 4 Nm (3 lbf ft).

9. Lower the car, refill with the specified amount of coolant and check the tightness of the system.

10. Replace the expansion tank lid, start the engine and let it run until warm, preferably at varying rpm, until the thermostat opens. Turn off the engine and refill if necessary.
