Heater Control Valve: Service and Repair

To change the temperature control valve:

1. Remove the cover under the switches on the steering column

I Of II:

2. Remove the center console (if installed)
3. Remove the lower section of the instrument panel

II Of II:

4. Remove the air diffuser (5 screws)

5. Remove the left-hand speaker grille.
6. Remove the control rod from between the water valve and the control knob by sliding the rod as far forward as it will go so that it comes free from the knob. Next, pull the rod back to free it from the water valve. The plastic joint at the control knob is accessable from underneath once the switches below the heater controls have been pressed backwards.

7, Remove the lower section of the heater housing.

8. Drain off sufficent coolant to enable the hoses to the water valve in the engine compartment to be disconnected without spillage. Disconnect hoses to water valve; to prevent coolant leaking onto the carpeting, plug the hose fittings on the heater valve.

Note: If removing only the heater valve, use a long 4mm hexhead driver to remove the screws securing the heater valve to the heater core.

I Of II:

9. Remove heater valve
10. Installation is the reverse of removal.

Note:
- Always replace the heater core to heater valve O-rings.
- The heater valve should be in the off position (flat surface up) before connecting the control rod
- The mounting holes in a new valve may not be tapped; if so, use thread forming (self tapping) screws.
- Check the operation of all foot pedals before reinstalling the lower dash pad

Note: Reinstall the heater hoses to the heater valve so that the top hose leads to the water pump and the lower hoses comes from the intake manifold.

11. Refill and bleed the cooling system
