DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION
Main instrument display panel
There are two different versions of the main instrument display panel on the dashboard, main instrument display panel 1 and main instrument display panel 2. Only information of a more general nature on the system is provided in this system.

Main Instrument Display Panel 1 Incorporates The Following:
^ Speedometer
^ Total mileage recorder (odometer)
^ Trip mileage recorder
^ Fuel gauge
^ Temperature gauge
^ Indicator and warning lamps

Speedometer
ABS control module 547 continuously sends a speed signal to pin 7 (main instrument display panel 1) or pin 5 (main instrument display 2) of electronic speedometer 111. The speed signal is a pulsed signal, the frequency of which varies with the speed of the car.

Rev Counter (Tachometer) 110 (Main Instrument Display Panel 2):
The rev counter in main instrument display panel 540B is supplied with current on pin 55 via fuse 17. The control pulses which the rev counter needs in order to show engine rpm are obtained from pin 6 of the engine management system.

Fuel Gauge 47A
When the ignition switch is in the Drive position, positive voltage is supplied via fuse 17 to pin 8 (main instrument display panel 1) and pin 55 (main instrument display panel 2) in the main instrument display panel and then to:
^ fuel gauge 47A
^ fuel low indicator lamp 47B

The fuel gauge tells the driver how much fuel is left in the tank.

Level sensor 46 has a variable resistor, the resistance of which corresponds to the level sensed by the float in the tank. The sensor is connected to pin 14p-1 (main instrument display panel 1) or pin 11 (main instrument display panel 2).

The instrument senses the resistance of the level sensor and controls the current passing through the fuel gauge so that the position of its needle corresponds to the sensor's resistance.

Main instrument display panel 2 has fuel consumption information available for other systems needing this information. When there is only about 10 liters of fuel left in the tank, indicator lamp 47B is grounded and the lamp lights up.

Temperature Gauge 47C
The temperature gauge displays the temperature of the engine coolant.

When the ignition switch is in the Drive position, current is supplied via fuse 17 to pin 8 (main instrument display panel 1) and pin 55 (main instrument display panel 2) of the main instrument display panel.

The temperature sensor informs the ICE control module of the temperature of the coolant. This information is then sent to the main instrument display panel in the form of a PWM signal when the ignition switch is in the Start or Drive position.

For main instrument display panel 1, the temperature display is controlled by the ICE, i.e. the breakpoints in the temperature display are directly programmed into the ICE.

For main instrument display panel 2, the temperature display is controlled by the main instrument display panel's control module.

Indicator And Warning Lamps

47D Oil Pressure Warning Lamp
The oil pressure warning lamp is located in the top right-hand corner.

This warning lamp tells the driver that the engine oil pressure is too low.

Current is supplied via fuse 17 on pin 8 (main instrument display panel 1) or pin 55 (main instrument display panel 2) and then to the warning lamp (47D).

Should the oil pressure drop below 0.3-0.5 bar, oil pressure sensor 44 closes and the lamp lights up.

47E Charging Indicator Lamp
The charging indicator lamp is located in the top right-hand corner and tells the driver whether the battery is being charged or not.

When the ignition switch is in the Drive position, positive voltage is supplied via fuse 17 to pin 8 (main instrument display panel 1) or pin 55 (main instrument display panel 2) and then to indicator lamp 47E.

When the generator is not charging, the lamp is grounded via pin 11 (main instrument display panel 1) or pin 15 (main instrument display panel 2).

When the generator is charging, generator terminal D+ receives the same voltage as generator terminal B+. Consequently, the indicator lamp is supplied with current on both pins and the lamp goes out.

47F Brake Fluid Warning lamp
The brake warning lamp indicates to the driver when the level is too low in the brake fluid reservoir. When the ignition switch is in the Drive position, current (+15 circuit) is supplied via fuse 17 to pin 8 (main instrument display panel 1) and pin 55 (main instrument display panel 2) and then to warning lamp 47F.

When the brake fluid level is too low, brake fluid warning switch 42 grounds the warning lamp via pin 8 (main instrument display panel 1) or pin 18 (main instrument display panel 2).

47G Main Beam Indicator Lamp
The indicator lamp is located in the top left-hand corner and tells the driver that the headlamps are on main beam.

The indicator lamp is supplied with current on pin 13 (main instrument display panel 1) or pin 37 (main instrument display panel 2) via main-beam fuse 8.

The instrument grounds indicator lamp 47G.

47H-I Left-hand And Right-hand Direction Indicator Repeater Lamps
These repeater lamps are located in the upper part of the main instrument display panel and are supplied with current via the ICE control module on pins 2 and 14 (main instrument display panel 1) or on pins 21 and 51 (main instrument display panel 2).

The lamps are connected in parallel with the direction indicators on the appropriate side of the car.

47L EXH Warning Lamp
This warning lamp warns the driver that the three way catalytic converter is overheated.

When the temperature of the catalytic converter reaches 825 [plusmn] 25°C, the warning lamp lights up and remains on until the temperature has dropped by about 10°C.

The warning lamp is supplied with current in the main instrument display panel and grounded by EXH relay 416.

47M Handbrake Warning Lamp
The hand brake warning lamp is located in the top right-hand corner and tells the driver that the hand-brake is applied.

The warning lamp is supplied with current in the main instrument display panel.

As long as the handbrake is applied, the lamp will be grounded via switch 43.

47N Rear Fog Light Indicator Lamp
The rear foglight indicator lamp is located in the top left-hand corner and tells the driver that the rear fog light is switched on.

The indicator lamp is supplied with current via pin 12 (main instrument display panel 1) or pin 52 (main instrument display panel 2).

The lamp is grounded by the main instrument display panel.

47O Malfunction Indicator (CHECK ENGINE) Lamp
The malfunction indicator (CHECK ENGINE) lamp (MIL) warns the driver when a fault occurs in the engine management system.

The lamp is supplied with current in the main instrument display panel and grounded via the engine management system.

47Q ABS (ANTI LOCK) Warning Lamp
The ABS control module monitors the operation of the anti-lock brake system and in the event of a malfunction lights up the ABS warning lamp, which is located on the right in the main instrument display panel.

When the lamp is on, the ABS is inoperative and the brakes work just like conventional brakes.

47T Airbag Warning Lamp
See "Airbag".

47U Cruise Control Indicator Lamp
See "Cruise Control System".

47V Lights On Indicator Lamp
Cars for certain markets are equipped with indicator lamp 47V which shows when the head lamps are switched on.

The indicator lamp is supplied with current from lights switch 10 and grounded by the main instrument display panel.

47Y TCS OFF Warning Lamp
The warning lamp tells the driver if a malfunction occurs in the Traction Control System.

The lamp also lights up if the Traction Control System is disengaged by means of switch TCS 518.

The lamp is supplied with current from TCS control module 507 and grounded in the main instrument display.

520 SPORT Indicator Lamp
On cars equipped with a TCM (Transmission Control Module), this indicator lamp lights up when the S button on the selector lever is pressed. See also "TCM".

521 "Defective Lamp" Indicator Lamp
This indicator lamp in main instrument display panel 1 is supplied with current from the ICE control module (for the rear lamps) and from the front filament monitor (for the front lamps) via the SID unit.

When a bulb fails, either at the front or the rear, indicator lamp 521 lights up in the main instrument display panel.

522 "Door open" Indicator Lamp
When a door is open, the ICE control module is informed of this.

The ICE control module grounds the lamp in the main instrument display panel.

523 CHECK GEARBOX Warning Lamp
When a malfunction occurs in the transmission (on cars with a TCM), CHECK GEARBOX warning lamp 523 in the main instrument display panel lights up. See also "TCM".

544 INFO DISPL Information Lamp
In the case of various CHECK functions, see the "SID", a warning buzzer sounds and the INFO DISPL lamp lights up to tell the driver that a CHECK function has been activated.

545 Central Warning Lamp
The central warning lamp is located in the speedometer (main instrument display panel 2) and lights up in connection with the following:
^ ABS Lamp (Brake System)
^ Oil pressure warning lamp
^ Brake fluid warning lamp (brake fluid level)
^ Handbrake warning lamp (if the handbrake is applied at speeds above 5 km/h)
^ Airbag system (replaces lamp No. 2)
^ High engine temperature

The central warning lamp is supplied with current and grounded in the main instrument display.

546 WINTER Indicator Lamp
If the car is equipped with a TCM (transmission control module), the indicator lamp lights up when the WINTER button on the centre console beside the selector lever is pressed.

Turbo Pressure Gauge 558
Trionic control module 430 sends a signal to main instrument display panel control module 540 which is proportional to the pressure in the intake manifold. On the basis of this signal, the main instrument display panel then controls the turbo boost pressure gauge.

The turbo boost pressure gauge is supplied with current (+15 circuit) via fuse 17.
