DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION
The Traction Control System (TCS) is used on cars equipped with the Motronic 2.8.1 engine management system.
The TCS does not work by controlling the brakes but only by controlling the throttle opening.
The Traction Control System, which regulates the anti-spin function, does it so smoothly and imperceptibly that the driver only notices that it is in operation by the TCS lamp in the main instrument display panel lighting up.
TCS Control Module 507
Since the TCS control module, which is responsible for TCS regulation and control of the actuator motor, has built-in self-diagnostics, fault diagnosis should be carried out with an ISAT Scan Tool.
The control module is located under the right-hand front seat.
Control Module Inputs
^ ABS control module 547
^ Motronic 2.8.1 control module 510
^ Actuator motor 415
^ Switch 518
^ Data link connector 445
^ Brake light switch 29
Control Module Outputs
^ Actuator motor 415
^ Cruise Control system 508
^ Data link connector 445
^ Main instrument display panel (TCS lamp and TCS OFF lamp) 540
^ TCM control module 502
^ Motronic 2.8.1 control module 510
Power Supply
The TCS control module is supplied with battery voltage on pin 32. This voltage is also used as a power supply for the actuator motor.
With the ignition switch in the Drive position, current (+15 circuit) is supplied to pin 28.
Grounding
The TCS control module is grounded via pins 13 and 30.
Data Link Connector
The data link connector for the ISAT Scan Tool is located under the dashboard adjacent to the steering column (16-pin connector).
TCS Throttle Body
The TCS throttle body consists of the body itself and a throttle valve, actuator motor and lever. It is mounted after the regular throttle body.
The control module obtains information on the position of the throttle valve via pin 27.
The TCS control module also obtains information on the position of the throttle valve on cars with automatic transmission.
Actuator Motor 415
The TCS throttle actuator motor receives its power supply from control module pins 18 and 35.
If a fault occurs in the actuator motor, the TCS OFF lamp in the main instrument display panel will light up and diagnostic trouble codes will be generated.
Wheel Speed Information
To determine whether wheelspin is occurring on any of the driven wheels, the TCS control module obtains information from the ABS control module on the speed of the front wheels.
The speed of the rear wheels is used as a reference and this information is therefore also supplied to the TCS control module.
Engine Speed
Information about engine speed is necessary so that:
^ the control module can use it together with information on the positions of the main and TCS throttles to calculate engine torque.
^ the control module can use it together with speed signals from the wheels to calculate the gear selector position.
Brake Light Switch
When the brakes are applied the control module receives battery voltage on pin 23 and the control module then disengages the Cruise Control system.
Switch TCS 518
When the switch is activated, the control module receives a current pulse which causes it to switch the TCS either on or off.
Operation of the TCS can only be disengaged at speeds below 60 km/h.
TCS operation can be engaged at any desired speed.
TCS operation is always engaged when the engine is started or when the ignition switch is turned to the Drive position.
TCS Indicator Lamp
The TCS lamp in the main instrument display panel lights up when the Traction Control System is in operation and remains alight until the TCS is disengaged.
TCS Off Warning Lamp
The warning lamp lights up and remains on in the event of system faults and when the system is disengaged manually using switch 518.
FAULTS DIAGNOSIS HINTS
The ISAT scan tool is used for fault diagnosis and obtaining readouts of diagnostic trouble codes.
