Replacement-Rear

Because the brakes are self-adjusting, it is impossible to tell from the brake pedal stroke if the linings are worn. The lining thickness should be checked at specified intervals.
When vehicle is serviced, the brake pads must be replaced before lining thickness falls below .2 inches (5 mm).
Refer to figure when replacing rear brake pads.
1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel.
2. Press pistons back with suitable pliers (1), then remove pins and keep lock spring (2).
3. Remove brake pads. If pads are jammed, use brake pad remover tool 89 95 771, or equivalent (3), to remove.
4. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Clean surfaces where brake pads are in contact with brake caliper using soft metal brush, then check dust covers.
b. Tighten wheel studs to specifications.
c. Adjust brake pad clearance by fully depressing brake pedal several times.
d. Check brake fluid level and correct if necessary.
