Checking Break In Continuity/Short Circuit

CHECKING BREAK IN CONTINUITY/SHORT CIRCUIT
Resistance Measurement

1. Ensure component or cable to be checked is not live.
2. With instrument set for resistance measurement, connect the measuring cables to each end of the component or cable to be checked.
3. Resistance for wiring must normally be less than 1 ohm. Specified value applies to components.

Voltage Measurement
1. Switch on any load.
2. With instrument set for voltage measurement, connect black measuring cable to safe ground and red measuring cable to lead side.
3. In case of output from control module/switch, measure away from these and gradually move out toward load. When load disappears, you have just passed break in continuity.
4. In case of input to control module/consumer, measure away from current source and gradually move in toward control module/consumer. When voltage disappears, you have just passed break in continuity.

SHORT-CIRCUIT TO GROUND
Resistance Measurement

1. Ensure lead to be checked is not live and that any load has been disconnected.
2. With instrument set for resistance measurement, connect one measuring cable to load side of lead and the other to safe ground.
3. Move carefully on wiring and check at same time that instrument shows infinite resistance the whole time.
