OWNER INFORMATION ATTACHMENT:SAAB RECALL NO.290
I. What is the defect?
Seat Rail Locking Mechanism:
On certain 1994 Saab 900 3-door Coupe models equipped with manually adjustable front seats, it is possible that the two (2) trigger springs mounted to the fore/aft adjustment lever on both front seats do not develop sufficient force after adjustment or use of the "Easy-Entry" feature to ensure that the seat rail locking mechanism is fully engaged.
In the interim before this recall service is done, please follow these precautions:
^ Any time the seat has been adjusted (fore/aft) for the desired legroom setting or the "Easy Entry" feature used, always check that the seat length adjustment is firmly locked by pressing rearward on the seat or trying to dislodge the seat by hand and then pressing the adjustment lever downward to ensure that the lock is fully engaged. (Please see pages 42-43 in your Owner's Manual.)
^ If you should detect any fore/aft movement in the seat, safely come to a stop. Readjust the scat by pulling up on the lever bar at the front of the seat bottom, move the seat to the desired position, release the lever, and check the engagement by pressing rearward on the seat.
^ Should you have any concerns, contact your nearest Saab dealer or the Saab Customer Assistance Center (1-800-955-9007).
II. What are the safety risks?
If the seat rail locking mechanism is not properly engaged, the seat could move unexpectedly during driving. This could cause the driver to lose control of the car. As the lap/shoulder belts are attached at one to the front seats, an unlatched seat could also allow a front seat occupant to move during a collision, resulting in otherwise preventable injuries. Any fore/after movement of the seat should be treated as a warning that the locking mechanism is not properly engaged.
III. What is Saab going to do?
Saab Cars USA, Inc. has made arrangements with its authorized Saab dealers to remedy this defect without charge to you, beginning on October 25, 1994. We urge you make an appointment with your Saab dealer to have the original springs replaced as soon thereafter as conveniently possible. Please bring this letter with you on the day of your appointment.
The dealer will install new springs of the correct force in both front seats. While this procedure takes about 20 minutes to complete, the dealership may need to keep your car longer because of the flow of work in and out of their service department.
IV. What if you have a problem getting this recall performed?
