P1822
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE P1822
TRANSMISSION OUTPUT SHAFT SPEED (OSS) SENSOR, INPUT TO TCM MISSING
Fault Symptom.
Warning lamp CHECK ENGINE lit. The system's emergency program is activated. No output speed from the transmission (= speed of the car) results in hard gear shifting and the lock-up function not operating very well.
Condition
Signal from the Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor missing in spite of the car running.
Diagnostic Procedure.
1. Connect ISAT scan tool to the car's data link connector. Check the input transmission rpm by initiating OUTPUT SPEED on ISAT menu READ FUNCTIONS with the engine running and selector lever in position P.
If the measurement result is correct, go to step 8.
If the measurement result is wrong, go to step 2.
2. With the ignition switched OFF, disconnect connector H10-1 located behind the battery in the engine compartment (black 10-pin Packard connector).
Connect an ohm meter between pins 8 and 7 (female). Nominal resistance is 300 - 600 ohms.
If the ohm meter shows the correct value, go to step 6.
If the ohm meter shows a different value, go to step 3.
WARNING: In order to activate the TCS function the car can be run on a lift. If this mode is used you must exercise the utmost care. If only the front of the car is lifted up and placed on trestles, the hand brake should always be applied and no one be allowed in front of the car or near the front wheels during the inspection. The speed should be kept as low as possible but over 4 km/h.
Lift up the front of the car and run the car at a speed of about 5 km/h.
3. With the ignition switched OFF, disconnect the connector to the speed sensor, 532, on the transmission (black 3-pin Packard connector). Connect an ohm meter between pins 3 and 2 (male). Nominal resistance is 300 - 600 ohms.
If the ohm meter shows the correct value, go to step 4.
If the ohm meter shows a different value, check the connector and the wiring to the rpm sensor and remedy any faults.
If you cannot find any faults, install a new rpm sensor.
4. With the ignition switched OFF, carry out continuity measuring of the wiring between:
- connector H10-1 pin 7 (female) and connector 532 pin 2 (female),
- connector H10-1 pin 8 (female) and connector 532 pin 3 (female).
Nominal resistance is <1 ohm.
If the ohm-meter shows the correct value, go to step 5.
If the ohm-meter shows a different value, check the connectors and the wiring between them and remedy any faults.
5. Check connector H10-1 for slide-outs and remedy any faults.
Then go to step 8.
6. With the ignition switched OFF, connect a BOB between the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and the wiring.
Connect an ohm meter between pins 30 and 31. Nominal resistance is 300 - 600 ohms.
If the ohm meter shows the correct value, go to step 7.
If the ohm meter shows a different value, check the connectors and the wiring between them and remedy any faults:
- H10-1 pin 7 (male) - pin 30,
- H10-1 pin 8 (male) - pin 31.
7. Check input transmission rpm by initiating OUTPUT SPEED in ISAT menu READ FUNCTIONS with the engine running and selector lever in position P. Lift up the front of the car and run the car at about 5 km/h.
At the same time check pin 30 with pulse measuring, reference point pin 31. Nominal value 30km/h: 1.1 V (approx.), 190Hz.
If ISAT and the pulse measuring show the correct values, go to step 8.
If ISAT and the pulse measuring show different values, go to "Actions Before Changing a TCM".
8. Clear the fault code, start and test drive the car and check if the fault code reappears.
If a fault code is recorded, go to "Actions Before Changing a TCM".
