DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES PO12O, PO121, P0122, PO123
THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR, MALFUNCTIONING OR NOT WORKING AT ALL

Fault symptoms
The malfunction indicator lamp is on.
High idling.
AC compressor not working.
Any other diagnostic trouble codes (throttle position in clutch control module or automatic transmission).

Conditions.
If there is a short circuit/open circuit, a DTC will be generated after 5 seconds.

Diagnostic procedure
1. Check the operation of the throttle position sensor an the ISAT scan tool.

- Ignition switched ON.
- Connect the ISAT scan tool and select the "THROTTLE POSITION" command on the "READ FUNCTIONS" menu.
- If the ISAT shows a value around 2% or 99%, continue with step 3.
- If the value is around 10%, continue with step 2.

IMPORTANT: The ISAT shows the voltage of the throttle position sensor in % of 5 V, not to be confused with PWM.

WARNINGS:
- If there is a fault in the throttle position sensor, the clutch control module may put the clutch in the operating position as soon as 1st, 2nd or Reverse gear has been selected, and the car will start to move.

- Idling adaptation must be carried out after a new throttle position sensor has been fitted
.

NOTE: Idling adaptation, refer to "Service and Repair", Throttle Position Sensor

2. Activate the accelerator pedal very slowly, it should take about 20-30 seconds to move the accelerator pedal from the non-depressed position to the fully depressed position. Observe the display on the ISAT scan tool during the activation process.

The ISAT must nominally increase continuously from approx. 10% to approx. 90%. Any break in continuity will produce 99% for a short time.

- If the measured value is incorrect, install a new throttle position sensor.
- If the measured value is correct, continue with step 5.

3. Check the electrical interface in the throttle position sensor's connector.

- Unplug the 3-pole connector.
- Measure the voltage in the female connector.
^ Pin 1 to Batt - _______ approx. 5 V.
^ Pin 3 to Batt - _______ approx. 5 V.
^ Batt + to pin 2 _______ approx. 12 V.
- Measure the current (mA) in the female connector.
^ Pin 3 to pin 2 _____ approx. 0.1 mA.

The measurements above are to show whether ECM including wiring as far as the throttle position sensor are operating correctly.

- If all the measured values are correct, install a new throttle position sensor.
- If any measured value is incorrect, continue with step 4.

DTC's P0120, P0121, P0122, P0123:

4. Check the continuity of the wiring between the ECM and the 3-pole connector of the throttle position sensor for open circuits, short circuits and any stray current.

- If the measured values are correct, continue with step 5.

5. Erase the diagnostic trouble code and drive the car to see whether the DTC is generated again.

- If the diagnostic trouble code is registered, continue at "Procedure before replacing ECM".
- If the diagnostic trouble code is not registered, the action taken is correct. Otherwise the fault is intermittent in nature.
