IDLE SPEED ACTUATOR (ISA) MOTOR EXERCISER TOOL
An idle speed actuator (ISA) motor exerciser tool, Ele. AB.99, P/N 8981 320 828, has been developed for ISA motor diagnosis on vehicles equipped with throttle body injection (TBI). The ISA motor exerciser now enables testing the operation of ISA "ON" or "OFF" the vehicle.
The ISA motor exerciser is also used in retracting the ISA motor to properly adjust the throttle valve linkage as outlined in MR 244 and MR 277 manuals.
WARNING: After the throttle valve linkage adjustment is performed, always extend the ISA motor.
WARNING: After testing the operation of the ISA motor, or if the ISA motor has been replaced, always extend the ISA motor before starting the engine to prevent the ISA motor from jamming.
The ISA motor diagnostic procedure using the ISA motor exerciser Ele, AB.99 are as follows:
PROCEOURE
1. Remove the air cleaner assembly, except on 2.46L TBI equipped vehicles.
2. Check to ensure that the rubber boot is correctly positioned in its groove on the ISA motor shaft.
^ If not, correct its position and recheck vehicle for proper idle speed operation.
^ If correctly positioned, continue diagnosis procedure.
3. Open the throttle and attempt to extend and retract the ISA motor by pulling and pushing axially (in and out) on the ISA shaft.
NOTE: If the shaft axial movement is more than 9.525 mm (3/8-in.), do not continue, replace the ISA motor.
4. Be sure the ignition switch is in the OFF position.
5. Connect the exerciser clips to the vehicle battery (red to positive/black to negative).
6. Disconnect the ISA motor connector.
7. Connect the ISA motor exerciser 4-pin connector to the ISA motor.
ISA MOTOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING
8. Disconnect the ISA motor exerciser connector from the ISA motor and from the battery. Then, connect the original harness connector to the ISA motor.
9. Install the air cleaner assembly (if it had been removed).
NOTE: If the ISA motor is to be tested off the vehicle, the ISA motor shaft must be lightly preloaded to avoid having the ISA motor jam during the test. Use light finger pressure to preload the ISA motor shaft and simulate throttle return pressure.
