MVB 4 Speed - Automatic Transmission




Control Valve Body Replacement

Removal Procedure

1. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Service and Repair).
2. Remove the left hand side engine splash shield.
3. Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain ATF.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

4. Install a new gasket and the drain plug and tighten to 49 Nm (36 ft lb).

Note: Some fluid will remain in the oil pan. Remove all the oil pan bolts, and carefully remove the oil pan sub-assembly.

5. Remove the bolts and remove the oil pan and oil pan gasket.




6. Remove the magnets (1) from the oil pan.




7. Examine the particles in the oil pan.
Collect any steel chips with the removed magnets. Look carefully at the chips and particles in the pan and on the magnets to see the type of wear which might be found in the transaxle.

Result
* Steel (magnetic): bearing, gear and plate wear
* Brass (non-magnetic): bushing wear





Note: Perform the operation carefully as some fluid will come out from the oil strainer.

8. Remove the bolts (1) and remove the oil strainer.




9. Remove the oil strainer gasket (1) from the oil strainer.




10. Disconnect the connectors (1).
11. Remove the bolt and lock plate and remove the ATF temperature sensor (2).




12. Remove the bolts (3) and remove the manual detent spring cover and manual detent spring (1).





Note: Do not drop the check ball body, check ball body spring or accumulator piston.

13. Remove the bolts (1) and remove the valve body assembly.




14. Remove the check ball body (2) and check ball body spring (1).




15. Remove the transaxle case 2nd brake gaskets (1, 2).




16. Remove the manual valve from the valve body.




17. Remove the bolt (1) and pull out the shift solenoid valve S1.




18. Remove the bolt (1) and pull out the shift solenoid valve S2.




19. Remove the bolt (1) and the solenoid lock plate.
20. Pull out the shift solenoid valve SLU.




21. Remove the bolts (4, 6) and No. 3 solenoid lock plate from the valve body.
22. Pull out the shift solenoid valve ST from the valve body.
23. Remove the No. 1 solenoid lock plate from the shift solenoid valve SLT.
24. Pull out the shift solenoid valve SLT from the valve body.

Installation Procedure




1. Install the shift solenoid valve SLT to the valve body.
2. Install the No. 1 solenoid lock plate to the shift solenoid valve SLT.
3. Install the shift solenoid valve ST to the valve body.
4. Install the No. 3 solenoid lock plate to the valve body with the bolts (4, 6) and tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb in).




5. Install the shift solenoid valve SLU onto the valve body.
6. Install the solenoid lock plate with the bolt (1) and tighten to 11 Nm(97 lb in).




7. Install the shift solenoid valve S2 to the valve body with the bolt (1) and tighten to 11 Nm(97 lb in).




8. Install the shift solenoid valve S1 to the valve body with the bolt (1) and tighten to 11 Nm(97 lb in).




9. Coat the manual valve with ATF WS, and install it to the valve body.




10. Coat the new transaxle case 2nd brake gaskets (1, 2) with ATF WS, and install them to the transaxle case.




11. Install the check ball body spring (1) and check ball body (2).




12. Align the groove of the manual valve with the pin of the manual valve lever.
13. Install the valve body with the bolts (1-4). Refer to Transmission General Specifications (Transmission General Specifications) for Bolt Length - A.




14. Install the manual detent spring (4) and manual detent spring cover with the bolts (1, 2). Refer to Transmission General Specifications (Transmission General Specifications) for Bolt Length - B.
15. Check that the manual valve lever comes in contact with the center of the roller at the tip of the manual detent spring.
16. Install the bolts and tighten to 11 Nm(97 lb in).




17. Install the ATF temperature sensor with the lock plate and bolt (3). Tighten the bolt to 11 Nm (97 lb in).
18. Connect the shift solenoid valve connectors.




19. Coat a new oil strainer gasket (1) with ATF WS and install it to the oil strainer.




20. Install the oil strainer with the bolts (1) and tighten to 11 Nm(97 lb in).




21. Install the automatic transaxle oil pan sub-assembly.
22. Install the magnets (1) to the oil pan.




23. Install the oil pan and a new gasket with the bolts and tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb in).
24. Connect the negative cable to the battery.
25. Add the automatic transaxle fluid.
26. Inspect for an automatic transaxle fluid leak.
27. Install the left hand side engine splash shield.
