Brake Pedal Travel Measurement and Inspection

Special Tools

J 28662 Brake Pedal Effort Gage

1. Tilt the steering column to the highest position.
2. Lock the steering column.
3. Install the J 28662 , or equivalent, to the brake pedal.
4. Release the park brake.
5. Start the engine.

6. With the engine running at idle speed, measure and record the distance (1) from the brake pedal to the rim of the steering wheel. Note the points of measurement.
7. Slowly apply and maintain the brakes with 294 N (66 lb) of force to the brake pedal.
8. While maintaining 294 N (66 lb) of force to the brake pedal, measure and record the distance (2) from the same point on the brake pedal to the same point on the rim of the steering wheel.
9. Release the brakes.
10. Subtract the initial measurement, unapplied (1), from the applied measurement (2) in order to obtain the brake pedal travel distance.

The maximum brake pedal travel, measured with 294 N (66 lb) of force to the brake pedal, the engine ON, and the brakes cool, is 70 mm (2.8 in).

11. Turn OFF the engine.
12. Remove the J 28662 , or equivalent, from the brake pedal.
