DTC P0617

Diagnostic Instructions

* Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle (Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle) prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
* Review Strategy Based Diagnosis (Strategy Based Diagnosis) for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
* Diagnostic Procedure Instructions (Diagnostic Procedure Instructions) provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

DTC Descriptor
DTC P0617
- Starter Relay Control Circuit High Voltage

Circuit/System Description

While the engine is cranking, battery voltage is applied to the powertrain control module (PCM). On a cold engine the PCM can increase the fuel injection volume and modify ignition timing when receiving the start signal. This signal passes through the park neutral position (PNP) switch or the clutch pedal position (CPP) switch. If this signal is not detected during engine cranking, the PCM will still allow the engine to start.

Conditions for Running the DTC

* The battery voltage is greater than 10.5 volts.
* Engine speed is greater than 1,000 RPM.
* Vehicle speed is greater than 20 km/h (12 mph).
* DTC P0617 runs continuously once the above conditions have been met.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

A high voltage is input on the Crank Signal circuit of the PCM for greater than 20 seconds after starting the engine.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

DTC P0617 is a type A DTC.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTC P0617 is a type A DTC.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Starter Switch parameter. The reading should be Released.
2. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.

Circuit/System Testing
Warning: Refer to Electric Coolant Fan Warning (Service Precautions).

1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X1 harness connector at the PCM.
2. Ignition ON, verify a test lamp does not illuminate between the crank signal circuit terminal X1-48 and ground.

If the test lamp illuminates, test the crank signal circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, test for a faulty PNP switch with AT or a faulty clutch pedal position switch with MT.

3. If all circuits test normal, replace the PCM.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the diagnostic procedure.
